No it was union pacifics decision after all the crap Steve put her through. Because of the economy and its current shape at the time the price of restoring her was too substantial.

I am glad to hear that UP Challenger 3985 will receive a new home in Silvis, Illinois and will be rebuilt and possibly returned to active service in the future. Union Pacific rr has also donated locomotives 5511 and 6936 to be repaired & restored as well.

First I want to say this was an amazing video. Keep up the great work. The 3985 Challenger for some reason is my favorite engine of the UP steam engines. I love the Challenger and I am so grateful that she is going to be restored to the magnificent queen that she was. I am disappointed in the Union Pacific treatment of the Challenger like she was disposable, second rate thing.

Now I understand a little more on 3985s system and why it was failing, she wasn’t patched up right nor was she worked on. looking at those moments on her body. From the bubbling coming from the bolts the steam leaking from the pipes she was in bad shape but she went far and I’m proud of that she’s an engine that never gave up and now she’s getting another chance when she goes to Silvis with 5511. Once she’s completed in another decade or hopefully doesn’t take that long she will return and roar along the line once again. Long live steam, Long live the Giants And the survivors of the steam era

6:45 is that a leaking flexi stay cap or washout plug? Either way, you’re braver than I am. I wouldn’t stand within a mile of an engine that I knew leaked like that. Scary shit

And people have the audacity to be mad that Ed Dickens sidelined 3985 as soon as he became head of the steam program! Both 3985 and 844 were VERY worn out by the time Steve Lee finally left. 844 needed completely refabricated boiler tubes and 3985's firebox was in WORSE shape than 4014's firebox was before its restoration! There was even a hammer jury-rigged to its dynamo since it would give out so much from the shoddy maintenance! It had a rope tied to it that led back to the cab where when pulled the hammer would HIT THE DYNAMO to get it started again! 3985 was an absolute mess and hopefully the folks in Silvis will correct all the wrongs done to it. Too many people kiss Steve Lee's ass just because he "made big steam engine go very fast" when the two locomotives under his "supervision" at UP came very close to becoming rolling bombs!

@@northwestorient8735 WP 165 is another example of a Steve Lee mess. It had two leaking staybolts the second day of public excursions, and the fire went out for over 10 minutes during a run. Ah yes, sucking cold air into hot flues… I know all about the dynamo. I’ve seen photos, courtesy of the uploader of this video.

The big boys and the challengers carried a lot of similarities and differences. some of the easiest differences to see between the two were wheel classification length of the engine and strength and speed
