Not much in it, but then noise blankers are just a handful of components at the front end. They all pretty much do the same job ...they gate ignition or spike type noise away. Mine completely eliminates S9 electric fence clicks at this QTH which is great. BUT... and this is important. Don't leave the NB switched on all of the time, it decimates your dynamic range and allows close in signals to break through easily. In fact, if you ever hear splatter breaking through, check that your NB is switched off.

I have the Yaesu FTdx101MP, TenTec Orion I (Model 565) and the Ten Tec Orion II (Model 566) with Optional RX366 receiver. I concur that the TenTec audio is quieter and actually can be configured to sound like listening to FM. The trade off is that there is a slight learning curve to enable the user to set the Orion up but when you do (combination of RF Gain, High/Low shift and Passband tuning along with the Bandwidth control). The bad thing is the Orion's (Ten Tec) are not made any longer and IF you have a problem it's possible that you will have a "brick" of a radio but as long as they work they (In my opinion) beat, hands down, the Yaesu FTdx101 series radios AND actually the Kenwood TS990s which I also have. We (amateur community) lost a lot when Ten Tec shut down production account of retirements. I hope the one who has it now will one day resurrect the brand and build an Orion III. I think he has the desire but I fear he may not have the workers to enable him to accomplish the feat of returning Ten Tec to Amateur Radio viability.

First, in a rapidly changing band condition ( and you had it in spades on this video) you cannot flip back and forth between radios and think that shows the advantage on one over the other. You must take the incoming signal off the antenna, split it, feed it to separate radios and send the output of Rx-A into one ear and the output of Rx-B into the other ear so you are hearing both in real time. Second (just observation, not an attack ) your 101 was maladjusted. I note in your video you had tons of gain above the noise threshold, preamplifiers on, and random stabs at various gnobbies. I find when others operate my DX10 (field day, etc.) and I sit back down later, often times the RF gain (threshold) is up to '11' , DNR is activated to some random number, shifts are on, double preamplifiers on, receive EQ curve looks like it was run over by a Mack Truck, and so jacked out of shape it sounds like dog poop. A conventiona single-stagel superhet receiver can sound good in poor conditions if the RF / IF is not over driven and the operator keeps his gerplucken fingers off the NB, AGC, etc. gnobbies. Over the past 5 years I have done many comparisons (test set-up as described above) with my older "flagship radios" (in their day, they were) to the SDR revolution radios (Yaesu and Flex plus other dongles - and the SDR under test wins the overall score on receive almost all the time.

There's a reason I have two radios on the desk. NO single radio is the "best" at everything as we all know. I was just trying to show the differences between both radios using normal settings that most use. On 10m, a preamp is almost always necessary. Especially when someone is as weak and there is rapidily changing QSB. I had a flex 6400 and it was terrible with weak signals, it you look at shewood's list, it has the worst Noise floor on the list.

I recently sold my 101D due to its horrible ergonomics mainly. It is also has a high noise floor, has harsh audio, and to me the screen looks like an 80s arcade game. I just got an RGO One and it is soooo much quieter. The 101D filter has audible whines and squeals. It is tiresome to listen to long-term. The big three have totally lost the thread, IMHO.

Glad you did this video. I actually decided to sell my FTDX101D and get the RGO. Not because of this video butg this is more confirmation that the new-fangled radios are somewhat overrated for the money invested in them. There is something very artificial about today's digital radio audio and noise filtering capabilities that I have been unable to embrace fully in daily use. My original 1970 FT-101 has none of these issues. We need more "big three" alternatives like the RGO One. 73 de Scott W1AL

I'd be interested in one in "diy kit form" but l have no experience with surface mount. If they had it in through hole I'd seriously consider.

I’ve done the same comparison with the ZS6 and a vibroplex EFHW. At similar heights of 40’. The efhw had 100’ of LMR 400 and the ZS6 had 50’ of RG8X. The ZS6 had the expensive DX Engineering Balun choke at the ladder line feed point. The EFHW had no choke. The antennas were so identical it was freaky. Receive and transmit reports all identical. Both antennas were oriented in the same direction also.

Did you adjust the timing and depth for the 101 NB in its menu, to maximize the effectiveness? Can you check for degraded selectivity between the two radios with NB enabled? The NB usually degrades selectivity. A signal 5-6kHz away can bleed through with the NB enabled. It would be interesting to see if that is the case with the RGO. I’m very critical of DSP-based noise blankers. But all noise blankers only represent a temporary fix. Only outboard phase cancellation devices are effective without degrading selectivity.
@aj2isotadxing8 ай бұрын
The only other settings the 101 offers for NB adjustment are width and level of noise attenuation. Both settings didn’t seem to help much. I think it just comes down to hardware NB in the RGO vs DSP based NB in the 101. Same goes for roofing filters. Crystal mechanical filters seem to work better vs DSP based filters in my experience…
@douglasmcalexander52228 ай бұрын
That’s exactly right. I showed how the NB in my 1991 FT-890/AT beats the DSP noise blankers. But I was literally cursed at by a viewer and told to get off KZbin. I was told to learn how to use the newer radios. Obviously the viewer has not seen my full library of videos. Noise needs to be dealt with as close to the antenna as possible. DSP is too late in the game.
