Thanks! I was there Friday and got skunked over by the dam. It was my first trip ice fishing so I’m trying to figure out what might give me a better chance. How deep is it over there where you’re fishing? It looks very close to shore

I usually do best when close to shore but near a steep drop off. I like to be between 12 to 16 ft deep. Madsen Bay has good drop offs near shore and has some weed lines close by too. When you cwalk down the ramp go hard left and walk down the shoreline about 100 yards, start drilling and you’ll find them! 👍

How thick was the ice at Mud Creek?

It was about 4 inches of good dark ice with 2 inches of cloudy crap. It is definitely safe but the wind was pushing the open water up against the ice shelf and you could feel the ice slab moving and shaking - so it was safe and sketchy! The road out there was getting dicey but still doable! The cutty’s were snapping 👍

More mobility out of the wrist if you hold the rod normally. Pencil grip takes away a lot of your reaction time. I used to pencil grip for comfort, some old timers showed the difference

I like the pencil grip when I’m jigging hard and they are catching on the fall. I can get leverage on them faster. Give it a try next time you’re out and let me know what you think!
