Electric water heaters are popular in Europe because they can run double the voltage we can in America. A 220v line requires a thick and expensive cable to carry current, but if you have a higher voltage grid you don’t need big cables because the heater isn’t drawing huge current when it has voltage instead.

hhmmmmm. i noticed multiple contradictions. the first thing out of his mouth was that heat pumps are more efficient. Then at the end he says one of the cons is that they use considerably more power. In the middle of his speech he says it will save 50% of your electricity bill. Which 1 is it??

I have a Noritz tankless water heater (uses gas) and the high pitched fan noise it makes after you turn hot water off drives me crazy. It's insane how noisy it is, all day every time you use water. Very annoying.

They’re all made in the same factories, efficiency rate can be cheated. Best thing you can get is a fan coil or hydro furnace otherwise it’s a box. Not a good trend to get consumers focused on the box and not the service. We offer 10-12 years warranty parts and labour on our own dime, plus consumables and tune ups for that 12 years.

Unfortunately harris democrat party con new laws have dramatically increased our electricity prices. Unless we get nuclear powdered like France, the $500+ annual electricity cost for an electric unit adds considerable cost with inflation.

Our experinces...While out of town a HVAC company charged me $2300 to replace a 40gall gravity draft NG HW tank at a rental, so I have been installing Stiebel Eltron electric units in all our upstate NY properties. Some are already 12 years old. In 2009 I replaced our 80gall NG HW tank with a cheap NG on-demand jaccuzzi I got at Lowes for $150. It was return & had everything with it. My NG bill dropped $1600 the following year & that old system is still running. But at the time we had 5 teenage showers going every morning with 2 of them teenage girls so that 80gall HW tank would run out of HW fast. My Lakehouse neighbor paid $3200 to replace his propane HW tank, has to drain & winterize every year, pay for the propane tank rental & refill & his propane fce is never used. That same year 2015 I installed a $699 Stiebel Eltron in our ALL ELECTRIC lakehouse & our highest electric bill since was $68 (summer 2024) with our mini split a/c etc also running constantly. 4 years ago I installed a Stiebel Eltron ($799) in our Scottsdale vacation home & the NG bill dropped from $145 to $16/month. Our old 50gall HW tank cooked HW constantly even when the garage was 110deg F. Our cooktop & BBQ are now the only systems using NG & the NG fces have NEVER been used. 5 years ago I installed an $899 AO Smith 166kBTU NG HW system in our 7 unit apt bldg. It replaced the 75gall NG HW tank that constantly ran out of HW & after 5-6 years they all leaked. The NG billing dropped signifcantly & with 17-20 taking showers no-one has complained about no HW. That same year my BIL replaced two 75gall NG HW tanks with a NG Navien system ($7200) & he had call backs for several months after for board issues & still waits minutes for HW to arrive at the faucetts.

I recently solved my "faulty" heat pump thermostat problem after 6 years of owning this older Florida home It tended to read a temperature than seemed unreasonably cold when I knew the the house needed cooling. I would compensate by setting the temperature for the cold setting to maybe 65 dg F so that the unit would turn on when I usually like the temperature closer to 75 dg. When the two months of heating season in Florida came around the reverse was true. I recently popped open the casing of the thermostat and bushed out the dust that had accoumulated over the years and noticed that there was a hole the size of a golf ball that the wiring came through from the wall behind. The thermostat was reading the temperature of the wall cavity more than the hallway temperature! Worst still was that the heat pump coils were adjacent to the wall that the thermostat was mounted to inside a closet. When the coils were cold the theremostat was reading colder than reality. When warm the thermostat read warmer than reality. Fixed it by shooting in a can of "Great Stuff" expandalbe foam and now everything is hunkydory! Yeah, feel stupid that it took me so long to figure it out but I bet I am not the only one with this problem.

I've been considering installing a whole-house (Aq****na) system in my house with PEX plumbing. My concern is that the chlorine will be largely removed, therefore allowing bacteria, mold, etc. to grow in the pipes. Is this a significant issue in your opinion?

As he said in the video, condensing models can re-use some of the initial exhaust, which requires more hardware (cost) and results in more heat from less gas used.

I understand that you’re going to be paying more in the winter to heat your home with respect to electricity bills. We’re on propane and live in coastal California. Propane heating is wildly expensive, especially since our furnace isn’t very efficient. I don’t see that it would be likely that we would be paying a lot more in the winter that would be in electricity rather than gas. But that was good information to know. First question: I thought heat pumps were more efficient at cooling than traditional air conditioners and would save us money on summer electric bills ….is that not correct? We need a 3 ton unit and we’re looking at a 3 ton 15 seer. we would probably use a larger unit except that we already put an independent mini split in our master suite which is on its own upper floor. Second question: shouldn’t heat pumps be located outside? One the reasons where making this change is that our old unit is hung underneath our house on earthquake fittings and straps and vibrates the floor in the dining room whether it’s heating or cooling it’s a 15-year-old unit and it’s just past its lifetime. It’s also very inefficient. The installer I talked to wanted to still put the new heat pump unit underneath the house. This doesn’t make any sense to me. The last thing I want is a chance of replicating vibration through the house as the unit ages or if something goes wrong - We have all deducting we need, and it would simply involve diverting the ducting from the existing unit to the heat pump. Other people I know have their units outside and it seems like it would be far less expensive to install it outdoors. Summer temperatures can get to 95 to 100 and winter temperatures can get low, but never freezing. A cold night where we live is , 40°. It is a rare night that gets down below that and freezing temperature is only encountered very rarely.

Hey, Northern Californian here: good questions, I don't have one yet due to renting pains but I've watched some heat geeks and Undecided with Matt Ferrels, but 5 minutes is a real brief time to not condense info. I mean I'm not writing this for good publicity returns but my friend Home-Installed a few home heatpumps with his dad, so here's to those questions. 1: Pretty sure that's all to do with the Seer, higher having better ratios. There's a ton of variability in efficiency, from 2.5 times for heating and ~=to A/C for cooling, 23 Seer getting like 3.5x more effective than the heated wire technology manages. 2: A unit(s) inside connected to one or more outside Fan heat exchangers with some advanced tubing between them. I've bystanded the installs twice, and it seemed more approachable than doing the same thing with combustible, leachable poisonous gas tubes, can't imagine burning on-site bring preferable.
