This is so good. I'm reading on your book right now, 'The big book of Christian mysticism'. Such a phenomenal read. I'm almost positive Damon Thompson (mobile Alabama preacher) has read this too because he seems to pull some stuff out straight out of this book.

Thank you for this introduction to Evelyn Underhill. It let me feel into her writings. Father Thomas Keating's friend Ken Wilber refers to her Mysticism book almost in every work of his where he discusses the path of Waking Up.

But to read most writing from before 1980, it sounds like there's only one gender. That's what I'm referring to.

I WOULDN'T wish to live locked up in a monastic cell for life but I can see the plus-es: You don't need to find a job or work long hours. No boss breathing down your neck. No pressure to do your work that well (praying) as no earthly person is watching .... (The BIG MAN upstairs might be though😢) No mortgage or rent to keep up with. Not much chance of being evicted by the landlord. A roof over your head for life. Heating and other bills all paid for. No wife or mother- in-law to nag you ( oooops !!!! .....a bit sexist ???) No household chores (eg. hoovering, to keep the wife sweet). No Income Tax demands Three meals a day guaranteed and as much monastery made mead as you can drink. Not much chance of catching infectious diseases (Black Death etc.) No one snoring in bed next to you. No need to scrape ice off the car windscreen on a winter morning at 7:00 am. You can read as many books as you like all day long and engage with some of the greatest minds who ever lived. No noisy kids or neighbours. No chance of falling out with family, friends or neighbours. A more or less guranteed ticket to heaven. You can take a wee snooze whenever you feel like it. Come to think of it .... ITS STARTING TO APPEAL TO ME !!!!😂😂😂😂

I know a number of people who suffer depression and they talk quite openly about. In fact they like to talk about it as it helps them get it of their chest(s) and come to terms with it. Thank goodness it's no longer a stigma to talk about anxiety, depression, psychosis and other issues concerning the mind.
@carl-mccolman

Certainly when someone expresses that it is helpful for them to talk about their mental health concerns, it's a kindness to do so. To me, that's different from talking about someone's mental health problems to third parties. And I agree, it's a blessing that the stigma is breaking down - although here in America, we still have a long way to go!

Hi Carl Many thanks for your reply. I found it very interesting and you clearly took a lot of time answering which I appreciate. Its always good to hear other people's views and we can all learn by this. I am always happy to be wrong, we learn by this. Just a couple of points. These days is it disrespectful to say someone has depression ??? I think not. The same is true of psychosis which is a horrible affliction. Also I firmly believe in a "creative intelligence" at work behind the universe. I believe there is a lot of scientific evidence for this view. I don't like to use the word GOD as it has been much abused over the millenia. Incidentally, if I were to subscribe to any religious faith it would be that of the Sikhs. Again best wishes Colin Lavery ... Scotland

Generally speaking, I do think it's disrespectful to do a "layperson's diagnosis" of someone's mental health situation - even when that someone is a close friend or loved one. I have a long history with anxiety and depression, and these conditions have been a cause of incredible suffering and distress. Having someone "diagnose" me is just adding more stress on top. I understand that there is a colloquial way that we use words like "depression" and "anxiety" that is an informal way of describing someone's mood, and perhaps that's what you're referring to. But I would encourage you to consider if the tables were turned: if you were experiencing the powerful sense of despair and malaise that characterizes being clinically depressed, would you really want people casually talking about your health? Especially people who don't know you very well, and/or who are talking about it in order to criticize your behavior (which is how this entire conversation got started, you were criticizing Julian's desire to live in solitude, assuming that must be evidence of psychosis). I am not too conversant on the teachings of the Sikhs, but the ones I know here in Atlanta are lovely people and their hospitality is beautiful.

Just to sum up finally. I never once said Saul of Tarsus or Julian of Norwich actually had psychotic episodes. If you read my carefully chosen words I used terms like PERHAPS or MAYBE. I was just giving an alternative possible and viable explanation for these "visions" If you like I was playing "devil's advocate" (literally or metaphorically) depending upon how one looks at it.
@colinlavery625
@colinlavery625 4 ай бұрын
Anyone who wants to live their entire life in a tiny cell has got to be "odd" This kind of lifestyle would drive most people crazy. Maybe her "visions" were psychotic/hysterical delusions. This is a perfectly viable take on the evidence. This is NOT me being judgemental. I am, in fact, very sympathetic to persons with mental disorders.
@carl-mccolman
@carl-mccolman 4 ай бұрын
Have you read Julian's work? My guess is you haven't, given how judgy your comment is. Perhaps you should read her before you criticize her. Her work is luminously beautiful, deeply poetic, and conveys a very positive message about trust, compassion and grace. Hardly the mumblings of someone with severe mental illness.
@colinlavery625
@colinlavery625 4 ай бұрын
Her mental state could be perfectly validly questioned. I have read her "works" and listened to the audio book and was not too impressed. It would probably impress a lot of catholics who would favour this sort of material. (I am nominally catholic)

@@colinlavery625 Everyone's entitled to their opinion. And my opinion is that it's usually not wise to judge another person as "psychotic" or "hysterical" when one does not have all the facts or is in a position to diagnose the person in question. As you are not Julian's psychologist, your comment doesn't have a good look. Matthew 7:1 - smart advice even for nominal Catholics!

For starters ... Christianity was the only show in town in England during the High Middle Ages. They had virtually no contact with eg. Far Eastern religions so were biased from the start. Many uneducated Christians, during this period, were terrified of hell and would do anything to avoid it, like becoming Anchorites. When hell is taught to young children it is a form of child abuse. As an ex-catholic, I am done with "wacky" doctrines. My experience with nuns and priests has not been a positive one.
@colinlavery625

There are many academics out there who think it quite possible that Saul of Tarsus could have had psychotic episodes for the following reasons: a) He violently persecuted Christians (most people wouldn't act in this way). Perhaps extremist groups would. b) He spoke of his "affliction" (to be fair we don't know what this was) c) He believed he saw and heard Jesus in a "vision" (typical of a psychotic episode) others around him didn't hear or see this "vision" In this modern age, if he presented this to a doctor, he would probably be offered medication. d) He then made a rapid switch manifesting volatile, unstable behaviour. By the way I am not stigmatising persons with psychotic episodes. The daughter of a friend of mine suffers unexpected psychotic episodes. She is a lovely person, highly intelligent and writes superb prose and poetry as did Julian of Norwich and Paul. Psychosis is VERY common. These are perfectly viable theories worth considering in the cases of both Julian of Norwich and Saul (Paul). I am NOT making harsh JUDGEMENTS of either. If they did have psychotic traits I would be very sympathetic.

The fact that institutional religion is in free fall is not that there is anything at all that is wrong with it. It is the depravity of the people. The teachings of the Catholic Church are true despite that fact that so few want to obey them. So, when we have a situation in which so few people are doing right, it is not the fault of Catholicism. If everyone in the world refuses to obey the commands of God, the answer is not to have people become mystics but rather encourage them to do the right thing. Just like at the times when Judaism was true and there were often periods that so few obeyed the laws of Moses, the answer was not to have the Jewish people become mystics but rather to obey laws of Moses given by God Himself.

It's easy to get discouraged with how many Christians don't seem to embody Jesus's compassion. But then I remember that doctors serve not those who are well, but those who are sick. I hope that "hateful Christians" might find their hearts transformed by the Holy Spirit. I know that doesn't always happen, but sometimes it does!

I love the idea of a mystical minute, great work! And I recall the wise (as ever) words of Valentin Tomberg, in Meditations on the Tarot, written over the last 15 years or so of his life, from the late 1950's through the 60's and up to his death in 1973, that Christians of the future would have to 'retreat to the catacombs'....he saw it coming as well

There is mysticism all over the Bible. Even the name, "I am." You should study the universally accepted definition of mysticism as a unitive experience wherein the self is totally dissolved into the ground of being. For that, see John 17: 22I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one- 23I in them and You in Me-that they may be perfectly united, so that the world may know that You sent Me and have loved them just as You have loved Me.

Just one practical thing to do. Go into any Eucharistic Adoration chapel and sit in silence there for an hour. Just look at the Eucharist. Second thing. Get into the habit of driving with the radio off. See what "enters" your mind. Third thing. When in a conversation you are to reply to your interlocutor practice stay silent for a moment. Let silence enter in. In that awkward silence have faith. Three easy ways to learn to be silent. Its also a good thing to record in your phone (ie note app) or write down any intuitions (ie understandings) that occur to you. The language of God is deciphered in the silence of a wounded heart. So learn to listen.
