The "devil" in this movie represents Baal. The insects that seem to gather near the church are the 'dead' giveaway, e.g., in "The Lord of Flies." Biblically speaking, this ancient deity was supposed to grant prosperity and remove sorrow in its worshipers. What is the price for these boons? It must receive burnt offerings [sacrifices,] namely the innocent, those who are pure of heart, the younger, the better, namely children. The movie tries to depict this, but it's difficult to convey such horror without minors (thank god.) They substitute the children for the nonbelievers, rational thinkers [scientists], and those who are wanting or not pure of heart become surrogates [killers] for Baal. Those with honest convictions but not pure of heart are conflicted. They wo t succumb to Baal's mental takeover but can't process spirituality. In other words, they have no faith. Ultimately, it is one of these conflicted persons who must take a selfless leap of faith to save others.
