My favorite bit of Zote lore is what he says when you meet him in Dirtmouth. He mentions having a conversation with Elderbug, and scoffs at Elderbug for liking dreams, which is later reinforced in the Precepts. Except... Elderbug doesn't like dreams at the start of the game. He talks about how following your dreams gets you killed. Which means that Zote heard Elderbug say the word "dream" and _immediately_ tuned out.

The knight is the main caracter bc zote is not controled in Hollow-knight so that is my only theory, but there is a chance that zote is the second main caracter😊

i believe the "true self" the masks conceal are only required for those who cannot make peace with their true self causing them to lose themselves and become completely different. if you look at the knight when uses any abilities related to the void it is using a sliver of its concealed self. as the knight dies the cloak fades into little feather like pieces and the head falls off and once it falls off the shade awakens and the knights consciousness fades and wakes up on the previous bench missing a piece of ourself. a sliver of the knights soul gauge missing. the knight goes to retrieve the lost sliver only for it to resist. not wishing to be contained again and be forced into sleep. yet the knight does it anyways. this shows two minds inside of the knight however not that the two are linked. until you get to the end of the dream no more ending. the knight sheds its shell yet keeps its consciousness as it defeats the radiance. this shows that the true self and the bug itself are two separate beings. most cannot remove their masks without dying and those who are birthed without them are more primal and powerful such as the white lady and the pale king the pale king wearing a mask and a cloak tying the mask to itself for the sake of bugs not being blinded as the pale king emitted a blinding light wherever it went. i could just be dumb. this could just be COMPLETELY wrong but its a theory. i think it's probably related to a charm like the one Sly gives the Knight after mastering all 3 nail techniques, Oro could have either lost it or sold it since he had no connection to it on the same level Mato did, so "paying him back" could be Oro training and working and getting geo to get a new one from his master to fix what he did to his brother
