The Knight is focusing essence instead of the soul because dreamers physical bodies have already deteriorated and only dream bodies remain but they also leave an image of themselves on the real plane like a hologram or shadow of an omnipotent creature. That is my personal interpretation of course

I assume the Knight is Focusing Essence- the Dreamers especially are in the Dream World and their projections seem to be wrapped in, composed of, and giving off Essence. In the case of the Hollow Knight, the Knight is Focusing the Infection (and thus the Radiance). Though that does make me wonder- it seems like Void can take on solid, liquid, and gaseous forms, so I wonder if Essence can do the same, and if so, the orange goop of the Infection is basically just liquid Essence?

They cant possibly get infected, since there are limits of corruption such as map parts and some doors, like sly was able to keep away from infection thanks to his door and mind, so was brenda. I think there s 2 reason for infection, interaction and mind weakness, since most of the bugs are infected after u unleash black eggs seal in forgotten crossroad, collector might have tought of keeping them safe with jars, since he loves diffrent kinds of bugs captured and grubs are one of a kind.

I think that Zote was from an outside kingdom and a super mighty warrior, but wandering between kingdoms made him loose a part of his mind, rendering him like he is today... This does make sense since even if the Knight doesn't have Soul, it can Focus in these specific occasions. In the Hollow Knight fight, it's clear the Radiance/infection is being absorbed, but in the dreams, maybe the Dreamers are the ones being absorbed? At least that's what's we can see. Or maybe it's the seals that protect them.

I didnt use the compass until after boss completion on my very first playthrough, and having to clear areas to check my map was honestly a nice bit of immersion into the world of HK. Id reccomend it for your first run, but after that honestly go crazy.

I recommend buying it inmidietly because Geo is plentiful of you do rocks and explore and it allows you to work towards Salubra notches faster. It's also the first 1 notch charm you get so for the earlygame it's either this or Compass.
