And is it possibility that the wheel is not good, i have impression that my wheel is not strait? Can i make a good piece on wobbly wheel?
@RachelDornCeramics3 ай бұрын
It could be a problem with the wheel. If you wheel is standing crooked on the ground/floor and that shouldn't be a problem, but if there's something causing it to spin inconsistently that could be an issue. Years ago I had a wheel with a damaged belt. It would not spin at the same rate through an entire revolution--that can be very distracting and cause you trouble throwing. But besides the basics, I'm not an expert on diagnosing mechanical issues. I have had good luck getting help from Clay Art Center in Tacoma (where YVC and I buy most of our supplies and equipment). You may also be able to contact the wheel manufacturer. Skutt, Brent, Shimpo, and the big name wheel manufacturers tend to have good support folks, in my experience.

how do you compress the clay when using these types of molds to prevent cracking?
@RachelDornCeramics3 ай бұрын
IDK, I guess I just push the clay in. I mostly only experience cracking if the clay is too dry

This is great. I've watched a ton of videos on trimming but none really talk about how to trim an uneven pot. Which is ironic since most people wanting to know how to trim are more likely to be trimming uneven pots. Well done. Wish I would have come across this video sooner in my pottery journey!

What is this type of clay ?
@RachelDornCeramics3 ай бұрын
Hmm, I don't remember, I think I was either using a red stoneware from clay art center (maybe Dakota Red) or a mix of random clays I had reclaimed from my home studio (which was mostly stoneware, maybe some raku clay too)

What kiln brand is this?
@RachelDornCeramics3 ай бұрын
The little text kiln is a Skutt, I think (I'm just looking at a thumbnail now) The big ones are L&L kilns

How do you clean out the tool's three vertical sections?
@RachelDornCeramics3 ай бұрын
I usually either just leave the clay in or let it dry, then tap it on the counter and it falls out. I have one of these at home where I filled the middle section with epoxy, but it didn't make much of a difference so I didn't do that for the ones at school

It's nice to have a spacious studio where you can add so many useful tools. But if you don't have room for this, I found a dough roller with the rings on two sizes that give you the even thickness. Search "joseph joseph adjustable rolling pin" and you'll see what I mean. But the thing is maximum width is only13.6" 😢 still very useful anyway

Have you tried using a deep silicone mold with clay? I was wondering if I could pour slip into it and if it would dry or not.
@faraheleinbaltasarculebro5783 Жыл бұрын
I am wondering the same 😅
@melanie_creates11 ай бұрын
I doubt it would. Slip cast molds are made from plaster to absorb the water but leave the clay and create the detail. In order for the slip to firm up, in need moisture to wick away on all surfaces, and silicone isn’t capable of that 😊
@RachelDornCeramics3 ай бұрын
exactly, the drying would be the problem. You have to pull the clay out when it is still pretty wet. If you pour slip in, it might just be slip you're trying to take out

hi, do you wash the foam after use? I just bought one and found it worked better on bigger pieces rather than holding mugs
@RachelDornCeramics Жыл бұрын
I don’t wash it because it doesn’t get dirty from the leather hard clay. It works better for wide low forms (plates, bowls) thank tall narrow forms like mugs
