I lot of people like jimis playing 69- 70. Band of gypsies was much loser as a band. Which was good in some ways. The bottom line is NOBODY was tighter together as a band unit with jimi than Noel and Mitch. Jimi used to change up (play tricks) Mitch Mitchel said, (you didnt know what jimi was going to do next). I never cared for Hey joe. Although their is live version (i cannot find anywhere on youtube. I need to search again) I had his on cassette years ago. A compilation of best sixties guitar players. Compilation guitar player magazine? Released late eighties, ninties? I dont remember. This live version of 'hey joe' Jimi's got thick mammoth tone, clear recording. Jimi changes up on rhythm, starting with walking bass line part Noel plays. Jimi starts, and both noel mitch almost miss, barely catch going intncredible! The ending leathery hided tone. Jimi plays triads E maj moving around similar to steve vai crossroads solo. Actor 'Ralph macho' imitates on pattern of E maj, B maj, D maj, A maj patterns after the arpeggiated paganini thing in 'A min'. Nobody, No rock guitarist played like that during jimis time. None that i know of.

I cannot believe that the love I had for Them all those years ago - thinking that it was Van Morrison, when he was just the vocalist of a wonderful time and place. Obviously, Billy was the man behind that precious 'Them' sound. As great as Van is, he just went all Hollywood and lost the true soul of rock and roll. Sad really as he could have been truly great had the 'group' continued and developed. Perhaps not commercially, but certainly leaving behind a Belfast musical legacy.
