what's the easiest way to find out the actual gear ratio? my 2.5L on 31" runs like crab when on inclining roads; i assume it has 3.73 but i'm not sure...
@thisoldtj
@thisoldtj 26 күн бұрын
If it's 98 or newer you can try plugging your VIN into this and it should pop out the build sheet with standard equipement and options. Mine shows the Dana 44 rear option and 3.73's as "3.73 REAR AXLE RATIO and HEAVY DUTY DANA 44 REAR AXLE". Also interesting, looks like my Jeep has made it's way from Orlando all the way to Seattle over it's lifetime. Let us know if your VIN turns up your axle ratio. I'm currious to find out if it only shows when it's an option vs. the standard ratio. Link to search your VIN: fcagroup.my.site.com/Jeep/s/equipment-listing

@@thisoldtj thx so much for pointing to the VIN decoder website! yes, it's a '97 and referring to VIN decorder it's a 3,73 rear axle ratio, and dana M35/194mm rear axle.

Big time thanks. You saved me a lot of money and time. $29 for the resistor. Lots of corrosion on my 2006 LJ, the old resistor literally showed rust. Thanks to user-bq5kr9tl8s, when I couldn't get the wiring harness to budge, I pulled the assembly and luckily the old resistor allowed my to use pliers to get a grip on it with some WD40 to rock it in there with gravity helping. Finally free. Saved myself time next time by only tightening the bottom screw which was easy to access. I also pulled the screw from the wiring harness for more hand room (rusty one in your video). Of note, the red clip was easier to slide to the open position with a small screwdriver.

What manufacturer bumper hoop is that? Do you think it would set flush with the front of the stock TJ bumper?

If you can find an old swivel stool, take off the padded seat (if it has one) and mount a piece of rounded plywood (mine is 24") to the swivel seat base. This setup makes a great small/medium size parts paint carousel. Its sturdy, saves time, reduces chances of walking around and bumping items to the ground. I've been watching your vids and really enjoyed them. I love the detailed instructions and explanations while you do the projects.

Also I forgot to mention. If you can, try to see if your blower motor fan spins freely by hand and is not clogged. Sometimes when the motors are getting old the bearings start to seize a little and the motor works extra hard causing the resistor to heat up and eventually fail. Also like I mentioned you may find your connector at the resistor has melted or is showing signs of heating up.

I’m going to bet it’s going to be the blower motor resistor. Usually when they go bad it only blows in high setting. If you google it or look on KZbin you’ll see how to change that. Its an easy part to change and a common problem. It’s mounted under a plastic cover below your glove box. Sometimes though the connector to the resistor is melted

@myjeeptjbuild , Yeah, I agree, I was hoping it was the switch since I'd only lost the two low speeds. None of my wires looked like they'd been overheated and I wanted the backlights back too so I went with the switch first. Now I have a spare switch once I figure out how to replace the back lighting bulbs in in.

Very cool TJ and one with a good platform to start making it your own. I have an '05 TJ Rocky Mtn with the AMC 4.0 I6, 3.73 gears, lsd and a Dana 44. I recently completed the build and now looking to Raptor line it since it's black and has a lot of rough paint spots with the usual hood crows feet. Plus I won't have to worry about off road pinstriping again. I had those stock Ravine rims on 32" bfg ko2's. Stayed with the 32" ko2's but unfortunately those Ravines had to go because of the lack of back spacing, was rubbing. Anyway, I'm sure you will have fun customizing this ole TJ.
