I read ’Small things like this’ and really didn’t get the hype, it was just okay. If I had started to read it expecting Christmas vibes I would have been even more disappointed!!! Also I accidentally read the blurb first and turnes out it was more interesting than the actual book :-D I haven’t read The Handmaid’s Tale yet but I’m planning to read it so glad to hear you liked it!! I just finished reading The Goldfinch after reading The Secret History and they were both really great! I tend to like sloooow books so they fitted my taste :-D

Thank you for not making me feel alone in my opinion of that book! And yes, I agree with you the message behind it is much more interesting than how the book delivered it. The Secret History I’ve been meaning to read it, I’ve been put off because I read books considered dark academia and didn’t like them so I associated it to them and never got to it. But same as you with the Handmaid’s Tale: you’re making me want to give it an honest try.

The Swedish book you were talking about is apparently called 'Män som hatar kvinnor' in Swedish whitch means 'men who hate women', so the French translation is much closer. I'm Finnish and the title is also translated as 'Men who hate women' ('Miehet jotka vihaavat naisia') here, so I guess the English marketing team just wanted to come up with their own thing :'-D As I commented a few days ago, I really love your videos!! <3 I don't have any recommendations at the moment, because I don't really read thrillers :,-( My fall TBR is mostly fairytales I found from the thrift store, The Night Circus whitch I'm currently reading (and loving) and some lighthearted classics like Anne of Green Gables and Beatrix Potter's illustrated stories. If I'm in the mood, I might also read some Jane Austen. :-) Hope you have a lovely fall <3🍁

I’m gonna be honest with you…. I sorta skimmed through Feast. There were parts with Brienne in the Riverlands and other bits I can barely remember that I really just couldn’t get interested in. It was rough. The other four books were very good though. Highlight for me are the Jon POV chapters in Dance.
@Lisa_Lit.erature
@Lisa_Lit.erature 10 ай бұрын
I was confused by some parts of this character’s arc as well (Brienne), but I ended up really enjoying it nonetheless. Jon quickly became my favorite character to read about, and also surprisingly in the 4th and 5th book Cersei. When there’s too much « traveling » going on for some characters I get so lost in their story.

@@Lisa_Lit.erature oh yeah, tons 😂 I feel like the narative rythm is off. The POV characters stay passive most of the time. Tyrion, Jon, Sansa, Daenerys, Asha,... they're all stuck in situations where they have to wait on other people to make the decisions. I guess that loss of autonomy is a theme the author wanted to explore, but damn... And then it all pays off in the last few chapters.
@Lisa_Lit.erature
@Lisa_Lit.erature 10 ай бұрын
That’s the thing though! I don’t feel it pays off enough in the last few chapters, one character only arrives at his « destination » the rest are still « traveling » . I’m like « damn Daenerys get on MOVING, give some proteins to your dragons and let’s gooo »😂

My reading habits have gradually diminished over the last three or four years. I went from reading nearly forty books four years ago to barely cracking twenty in 2023. As an English major in a reading dominated graduate program, personal reading is hard to maintain. So I just stick to books that I know I will get something out of. I might miss some great books in the process and be behind the times so to speak, but at least I get a personal enjoyment and satisfaction out of the books I do read.

I sympathise with you, readings in uni were, some semesters, so heavy that I wanted to do something else than read in my leisure time. I’ve always wondered how English & creative writing majors managed to keep a balance between work-related reads and fun-related reads as well as differentiate them. I’m glad you found it :)
