I wasn’t aware there were any Shackleton’s left let alone can run all their engines. I’ve always loved the Shackleton ever since I built the Airfix kit way back in the 1960’s. You can always tell how well a warbirds is maintained as to how difficult they are to wake up. This one’s engines fired up perfectly,and oh I love the contrarotating props!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I've been a history/aircraft buff all my life, but someone needs to explain this to me. What is the advantage of having two contra-rotating propellers? Would it not be simpler and cheaper to have a six-bladed propeller on each engine?

Eliminates torque swing on takeoff, good question though as I thought that “handed” propellers could be fitted ie one side spins clockwise and visa versa to counteract torque swing. The De Havilland Hornet was fitted with two different variants of the Rolls Royce Merlin on the same airframe. On one side the Merlin 130 and on the other the Merlin 131. One engine had left hand rotation and the other right hand rotation thereby elimination torque effect on takeoff. I don’t know if Griffon variants (Shackleton engines) offered handed options

Whenever I see these I am reminded of one pilot's reply when he was asked about being posted to the Shack in the UK: "We have Rolls Royce engines and leather seats, how could it be better". I once followed one of these into RAF Leuchars, he was hustling to clear the runway ahead of us and we were going as slow as we could without falling out of the air in a BAC 1-11. I was lucky enough to be in the jump seat. The relief when he decided to shoot a missed approach was palpable. It was a glorious sight when he turned and climbed away though.

In 1956, when I was six years old, our family moved to RAF St. Eval in Cornwall, England (Dad was an air traffic controller). The Shackletons use to fly almost directly over our house (Airman's Married Quarters) on approach to the runway. The station was closed down a couple of years later and the squadrons were moved to RAF St, Mawgan (Now Newquay Airport) a few miles away. I did get to have a tour inside one while they were still operational.

@@K1W1fly i think the wall you speak of is on the opposite side. I heard someone mention the wall collapsed so they had to move it to this spot.
