pretty stout considering all the things holding it back - weight, gears, tires, converter. Must be making serious power and torque. With a few changes its a 10 second sleeper.

Do you have info on the engine build? Sub 12 sec in the quarter with 2.56 gears in a 4100 lb car, stock converter, is beyond unbelievable. The motor must be something else, to be hindered with all the negatives. I ran a Mopar A body with a 500 BB, 3200 converter, street slicks and 3.55 gears and my best time was 11.06.

Heck yeah. An old 454 car basic done up with a 496. Kind of cool. 283 2 speed chevells gave me some problems. I would be rowing 4gear in my Duster with 391's huffing and puffing and the 66 or so Chevelle just went along winding along then in comes second gear and it from the top all over again for that 283.windind up that speedo. Hard to beat. Yhis thing with that th 400 he still has another gear. I drove a 71 electra with headers and kenny bell cam some stage heads otherwise stock for a while. I kind of connect with this guy.

Very impressive! When I raced they asked you to leave if you didn’t have a cage at that e.t. I think it’s worth exploring the suspension because I suspect the 60 foot time could potentially be improved. Can’t really say because I never ran highway gears. Congratulations!

Thanks for posting. I've had my 2.56's for at least 20 years. I never installed them. I'm too old to fool around with'em now. I'm selling mine. I knew the smaller the ratio the faster you go/rpm (I know nothing about racing). But I do know numbers. The 2.56 is good for gas and smoking the average Rat rod in the long run. But sucks for a fast take off.

I think the 2.56s are a nice compromise for a high-torque, street car.

Damn! Just think how much quicker it could be with 3.23 or 3.42 gears. Them would still keep it somewhat highway friendly too. Although it might light up the tires when trying to launch.
@dragginwagon4064 күн бұрын
Yeah, there are a few reasons that I’m still running the factory converter and gear. The highway gears help the axle shafts and side gears live as well as make it easy to drive out of the hole.

Not yet…it was a small block car with factory TH350. While the transmission was rebuilt with good parts, the torque converter is original to the car. The car now has a 632, so we’ll see how long the converter lives. One thing is for sure, they don’t make converters like they did in 1970 any longer.

Longest hood on any GM car for quite a while. 😂 Makes it fun to stand inside for engine work, once I installed electric fans.
@OldSimracer5 күн бұрын
Those cars were technically a mid engine, it set way behind the front wheels. I had a 1970 with 350 and it had a 2 ft snorkel shroud between the radiator and engine fam.
@dragginwagon4065 күн бұрын
Mid-engine is like the new Corvette, but I know what you mean…it’s certain setback from the front wheel centerline compared to a Chevelle.
@OldSimracer4 күн бұрын
@ I agree, a real mid engine means behind the front seats, Pantera or new vette. When the Mazda rx7 came out around 1980ish they made a big deal calling it a “mid engine”… because engine was behinds the front axle line, therefore in the middle of front and rear axle. ( marketing people are stupid 😂) I laughed about it back then and said Chevy did that in 1970 Monte Carlo…. Mine was a 350 2 barrel, “mono track” differential with anti-Stop brakes. I never knew if it came off the line good or not, there wasn’t enough power to spin the wheels. It was absolutely the easiest water pump I ever replaced. Remove shroud, climb in engine compartment, ! I love what you have done with this beast! Truly impressive! This is one of the sleepiest sleepers I have ever seen! Using those hubcaps borderlines on straight up abuse ! 😂😂😂. Do you have a tally board on dash for the number of mustang gt take downs? The only thing missing are some bumper stickers that talk about knitting or playing bingo at senior citizens centers. When we were teens in high school a spoiled friend’s dad bought him a brand new 1966 Chevelle SS 396, 325hp. He ran the shit out of it, and that thing, for what ever reason beat everything he raced: GTO’s, fueler Vettes, Road runners, modified everything. No idea why. He never touched the engine, it just ran so loose. A total mystery….

@dragginwagon4065 күн бұрын
That’s the math, exactly. Not many people realize that if this was a PG, it’d be easier to ET even quicker. 1st gear in PG with a 3.90 gear would be deeper than 1st gear with a TH350 and 2.56 gears. ..and 60’ is everything in drag racing.

That is very impressive the converter and 2.56's are killing you. I wonder what it would run with a 2500 stall and 3.55's. It sounds like you made the whole 1/4 mile without hitting 3rd gear 😁. I had some 2.41 desert racer T/A's back in my day.
@dragginwagon4065 күн бұрын
You’re right, the 2.56 gears make it a little tough to get moving off the line. It's definitely a fun car to drive though! 11.3-11.4 ET with a 3.55 gear should be within reach…but probably not on 225/70-15 Cooper Cobras 😂 As well, if it’d hook with 3.55 gears, the stock axle shafts are probably cooked.
@frankartale10265 күн бұрын
@dragginwagon406 honestly the converter is holding you back more than the gears. Maybe 3.08's you can hook easier. I had low 13 second 79 400 4spd 3.23 rear Formula with 225 70s and it hooked pretty darn good. But my car probably had 1/2 the HP 😁
@dragginwagon4065 күн бұрын
@@frankartale1026, yeah, if I “corrected” the gear or converter, I reach most of the potential ET improvement. 60’ is everything in drag racing, if I could drop into the 1.5-1.6, easy sub-11.5s. One of the car mags tested this out with their Nova years ago.
@frankartale10264 күн бұрын
@@dragginwagon406 I think you might go in the 10's with slicks, 2500 stall & 3.55's because you would hit your powerband 3 times instead of twice. You would probably go 4500 rpm through the traps with this combo
