EDIT (12/10/24) Hi everyone! I'd just like to correct myself regarding the image shown at 6:20. I just found out recently that this IS NOT a real photo of Eben Byers. The first time I saw the image presented as Byers was in a video posted by Mr. Ballen on his channel (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bn7Tg2ehaJKYmsUsi=TuUYWaix1bJyHRLY). However, a science communicator, Kyle Hill, recently clarified this matter in a video he posted 3 days before I wrote this comment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXrSeqFsnqmNnbs. I further checked more references online, and no reliable source indeed presents or verifies that the man in the photo is Eben Byers; you can just see the photo spread everywhere in informal/speculative sources like Reddit, Instagram, etc. This is an oversight on my part as a content creator. Apparently, it's a photo of a soldier whose face was blown off in a battle, and the photo has been widely used to depict Eben Byers' final days by various online references, especially on KZbin, as it could work as a good visualization of Byers' rotting jaw. I sincerely apologize for this mistake and will make sure to be more conscientious and accurate in the next videos I will post. Thanks, everyone!

Strange conclusion. I'd say it tell more about tech-bros and doctors. I recently heard on Ted-EX that radiation exposition can be beneficial... You know, they was using x-rays popular perception to sell the nuclear energy production as green and safe. Nothing changed... Also Kyle Hill just told this story as "snake oil vendor" cautional tale. Funny how is one of the pro-nuke boys also. Almost like when he support cats and dogs exterminations selling it as conservationism and compassion 🤡

Interesting perspectives! For the Ted-Ex one, I believe it's only true for low doses of radiation (a concept loosely tied to hormesis). If Kyle Hill is pro-nuke, I'm not surprised he holds that opinion regarding this tale. LOL 😂

@@AtomsAndStories no mate, to say that exposition to radiation sources can be beneficial because the image that x-ray give us is helpful for doctors to examine certain medical conditions is just a lame capitalistic marketing attempt. And is just there to be heard, nothing you can't really check instead of defending it assuming a total different context. It is helpful but you would not have a tons of procedures to minimize exposure if that was beneficial itself. I mean, Goebbels would be proud. This is not an isolated problem. There is a huge push right now to spread faith in the academic world and the business venture and governments that support that. It is done imposing the idea that science and academy are the same and everything outside is anti-science. In the while real scientific data get extrapolated out of context and extremely hugely complex issues get reduced to some simple slogans. Nothing new to be honest. That's why i find a purpose in talking about it and maybe spread some critical thinking. And to be clear there is nothing wrong with me if someone support a certain idea, tech or else... but i hate intellectual dishonesty. Nuke is great to produce energy and have limited environmental impact in the short terms if done perfectly. However a perfect industry is utopian dementia. And if you have at the first place the progress and human society, environment can't be also your top priority in a real world. You need to lean for a side here and there. To sell that, so, as environmental concern is nothing more than a scam. Also is getting in the way of the people that really care and struggle for environmental problems. Don't get me started on colonial style conservationism. We had plenty of shady characters like Julian Huxley in our recent history. (Father of WWF, natural reserves... and trans-humanesim and president of the British Eugenic Society) Science is a broad field of debates, ideas, researches, some really great people... obviously scammers and liars as well but also lobbies that fight to control all that world and how it is perceived outside. The recent madness of hate towards stray disguised as humanitarian care is disgusting. I got to know better Julian background exactly when researching the roots of that rhetoric. Always keeping Kyle as example (just because is well known) you can look under his most recent videos about "invasive cats" at the sources he kindly share with us. 1. An essay from Humane Society ( involved in stray war) 2. A "random" blog 3. a Bird conservation society (funnly even in the prev blog was stated how cat and bird conservationists are at fight eachothers) 4. The only real scientific paper that don't provide anything more than a brief recap of the evolution of the common cat. Sadly this is used to support also the unproven claims of selective breeding before the last centuries. This is way less than scientific, honest or professional and very much biased. No study about the effects of sterilization effects on healthy cats. No study about feeding behaviours of feral cats in various regions of the world. No discrimination between world's regions (as if an European, Asian or African native cat could be considered in the same way of one brought to a tropical island regarding environmental impact) No consideration on the impact of urban fauna when we take out the natural predators of that environment. (included the impact of venom diffusion for rat control purposes) I mean i would go so far to mention how the people behind this are changing even the technical terms in order to modify the public perception of their work. From sterilization to neutering and sparing, but since it wasn't enough now they are pushing "fixing". Because you know to cut gonads from a living being is fixing it since he/she wasn0t built properly before. (source: Mass volume spay neuter HQHVSN - conference recording, video available on youtube with a very comprehensive story of war on stray in USA from the point of view of the vets supporting it)

I’ve had an odd fascination with the Montparnasse Derailment since 2020. It’s an interesting event due to the improvements that would be made to rail travel as a result. It was a tragedy that a woman died, but considering how bad some train crashes usually are it’s a miracle how little casualties there were. Even the loco was barely damaged. The imagery of No. 721 dangling out the window is quite an interesting sight really.

I'll have 2 separate documentaries for Pierre and Marie Curie (in progress) where that name will be used. I just didn't give emphasis on those details since the subject here is Eben Byers and misleading "science". But I'm glad to know someone reached that part of the video where the radium/radioactivity stuff was discussed. Thanks for watching :)

@AtomsAndStories
@AtomsAndStories 2 ай бұрын
Yes, radium is a heavy metal. But it's the radioactivity (caused by unstable nucleus) of radium that makes it even more hazardous - other heavy metals are only toxic/hazardous to slight degrees. Around that time, radium has just been "recently" discovered by the Curies (1898) and the dangers associated with it weren't clear to Pierre and Marie Curie either; and if there is any, they were most probably undocumented. The couple was only aware through first-hand experience that it caused them severe burns but that was it. They were rather optimistic about it and they actually looked at radium as a potential cure for cancer. I read somewhere that they even kept radium salts (contained in a vial) in their bedroom because Marie was amazed by its glow. Pierre, on the other hand kept a vial of radium in his pocket to show to his friends. This Radithor "trend" occurred at the time when the health risks associated with radium and radioactivity in general were still under thorough investigation, so there was a bunch of misconception. :(
@junrobin9335

@@AtomsAndStories At least it didn't reach the heights of the green arsenic paints with heavy metals on them. But still it's a bit sad. Also did you read the article on the different breakdown rates of radium. I think I read somewhere it breaks down in different stages and that each stage, turning it into a different kinda radium or something (ain't educated enough to know the differences), would take less time to break down. I am curious about that someday. Considering we messed around with radium enough around the globe to need knowledge on it.

Just be sure to add the "above/below the +/- x-axis" expression after the angle. I explained this in the second example of the previous video (this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGS2gZ6rj9eFnbM).
