It was my great fortune to get to play a couple of quartet gigs with Bill Watrous. I was a big fan of his and more than nervous but Bill immediately put me at ease, complimentary, and encouraging. It ended up being a fabulous and memorable experience. Several years later, I saw him from across an auditorium and he waved at me, calling me by name! I was thrilled that he remembered me. A real gentleman and obviously, a super musician.

When I was a young student (19) at Berklee, I took a semester off due to an invitation from Carl Fontana for a 7 month stint in the late 90s in Las Vegas (I play alto). Bill Watrous frequently came to town just to hang and play with Carl, lots of people did actually. Carl always called Bill ‘Mr Chops’, and Bill always called Carl the most musical bone man the world had ever known. Both were just mesmerizing. I maintain I learned more in that 7 months than I ever did at Berklee. I learned from Watrous some years later after he was in the hospital for several weeks due to I believe a lung infection that he came to Christ due to what he was completely convinced was an intervention from Christ Himself in a vision. Bill was an extremely serious cat so I absolutely believe him and pray he’s in His presence now.

encore une fois, nous les musiciens devont supporter les incompétences de certains « ingénieurs « du son… La guitare,on ne l’entend pas ! Le trombone est quelque fois couvert… Et ils ont mis un délai sur le piano !!!

I don't think there will be any more trombonists like Bill Watrous these days. He was one of the greatest improvisers and mastered the trombone like no other!

Yep! Always amazed by Watrous. This video is great and super happy to find it! Think Andy Martin should get some consideration in the “these days” category though(!)

I know Vera, I have one brother left. And losing Adam was the toughest, but God got me through all of it. I’m actually a pretty upbeat person. I’m not depressed or anything. I’m bummed that I don’t have a lot of my family around anymore, but I still have a lot of family and God blessed me so much but thanks for your concern. I hope you’re doing OK.
