Congratulations on your receiving the Monismith Lectureship Soheil! It really makes me feel great when I hear that one of my Texas geotechnical classmates is getting recognized for their hard work and ingenuity.

Brad, Thank you so much for your great questions and leadership in making Director’s Cut a geotechnical legacy in its own right. Although I was one of many graduate students at U.C. Berkeley who was fortunate enough to be a witness to the final years of what I’ve labeled Berkeley’s geotechnical department’s “Golden Age”, when professors Mitchell, Harry Bolton Seed, Mike Duncan, John Lysmer, Dick Goodman, Tor Brekke, Monosmith, Houston, and Clarence Chan (the man who forge and kept the Geotechnical lab in top shape for all research projects and students learning). Although I took classes with Jim Michelle, served as one of his Research Assistants under Tom Brandon’s tutelage at the time, your interview with our beloved professor Michelle revealed nuggets of information and wisdom that will now be engraved in my mind and I’m sure in the minds of those who were also blessed to have known him. By the way, Jim’s son Rick was a classmate of ours during my days at Berkeley. Harry Seed’s son was also doing his PhD work during those days! What a time to be alive! In short, if you ever have any doubts about the amazing value and contribution of your both humorous and informative interviews and especially of such Geo-Legends as Professor Jim Michelle, just call on me and I’ll give you a pep talk worthy of Coach Vincent Lombardi, who you are too young to know who he was! 😂😂😂

So the sad state of affairs is that to reduce the risk, or rather to make risk-informed design decisions, more testing (often in-situ) is necessary that a typical client is not willing to spend $$ on. Boy, do they pay dearly for it in the form of massively conservative geotech designs. I guess what you don’t know can’t hurt you too bad. 😅

JB got me interested in geotechnical engineering and it definitely is the best field of civil engineering! I've translated my coursework and masters work into teaching geotechnical topics to dam safety engineers of all disciplines - but I'll never forgot how hard it was to attempt to teach mohrs circle as a "pinch hitter" for JB as a new grad student.

Liz - I enjoyed your interview. Your short stay in Maine was fun and you certainly added flair to the office. Glad to see that your are doing well. Jim Weaver

I'm a practicing offshore geotechical engineer in the UK. Just want to say Cone Penetration Testing in Geotechnical Practice (1997) by Lunne, Robertson and Powell was instrumental to my CPT knowledge. I have also used the guide by Cabal et al, great stuff, I had no idea they were related 😂

That's the oldest one we've found. We're always looking for more. Found the 2004 lecture on a shelf of completely unrelated CDs and DVDs in the ASCE offices!

Didn't Terzaghi and Darwin come from two different areas of the Sciences since Terzaghi, had nothing to do with Evolution like Darwin and Darwin had nothing to do with Geotechnics, as I understand it?
