Not strictly speaking as long as the dipole is truly balanced. Certainly for vhf and uhf anyway. Impedance matching is a must if you start wanting to make dipoles for the HF bands though.

No questions never had such a hard time getting warranty on something let alone the failure rate they have even on this thread of yours. There’s quite a few failure rates people are talking about. I’m on multiple other forums, exact same thing if they didn’t work out of the box, they broke down months later and the headaches some people had to go through to get replacement So I have done all the resets all the reprogramming, etc. I have the proper test gear for testing these radios. That’s a difficult one to answer easily. Firstly you need to get yourself outside and up in the hills. A better way to mount everything in that box is to cut a piece of 2 or 3mm plastic sheet to fill the bottom of the box, this can be screwed to the rows of mounts provided in the bottom of the box using self tapping screws, then either (for the filter) screw it to that sheet, and for most of the rest, drill holes for cable ties. This way everything is tied in place without any holes in the bottom of the box.

Clearly you didn’t actually watch the previous video in the series where I explain the principles of line of sight and signal degradation over ground and distance. Furthermore: AM signals do degrade over distance due to several factors: Attenuation: As the RF travels further from the transmitter, their energy spreads out over a larger area. This causes the signal strength to decrease, making it weaker at the receiver. Absorption: The Earth's atmosphere and other objects in the environment can absorb some of the energy from the RF, further weakening the signal. Interference: Other radio signals, electrical devices, and even natural phenomena like lightning can interfere with AM signals, causing distortion and making them harder to receive clearly. Fading: The strength of AM signals can fluctuate due to changes in the atmosphere, such as variations in temperature and humidity. This can cause the signal to fade in and out. Is distance a factor? Yes! Are distance and elevation the same thing? Yes. What was your point?

This was awesome, love getting new ideas for DIY antennas, especially low budget options! Just got done re-tuning an old "mystery" antenna I had in the garage for 30 years to GMRS and seems to be working quite well so far. In your design, how did you come to the 44mm distance between the two halves and what is the effect of closer vs further apart at that junction?
@M7EUP25 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Here is a mathematical answer: The minimum gap is zero and the maximum gap is λ/2. The mathematically ideal gap is 0, as explained in several books on antenna theory; there is an integral over the dipole length as charge is collected. Any gap between 0 and λ/2 will work, but it will work a little "better" if the gap is closer to --or equal to-- 0. However a gap of zero is a short circuit and won’t work, too smaller gap under a reasonable amount of RF will spark and short. The real answer is: Buggering about and seeing what works best. Ultimately I found that the lengths and spacing work for me and it’s a starting point for anyone wanting to recreate the build.

you should put MOVs in the circuit as well, the main reason why amplifiers die has to do with power surges
@M7EUP26 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment, most modern power strips contain MOV’s ( Metal oxide varistors ) to some extent to regulate power surges. However, in HAM radio application the transceiver is not usually directly connected to the mains power supply. It is fed 13.8V DC with a power supply unit, thus adding another level of protection.

As a FAA licensed pilot, how can I enable BAOFENG 5RM air band transmit? Is a schematic available that might provide a clue of how this might be accomplished? WB6BBB
@M7EUPАй бұрын
No. As an FAA pilot you should know that the production of transmit capable radios is highly regulated and scrutinised. Regulations: (UK) • The radio equipment should be approved by the Civil Aviation Authority or EASA; • The radio installation is approved by the Civil Aviation Authority Approved Maintenance Organisation; • The installation and use of the radio equipment is covered by a Wireless Telegraphy Act Radio Licence issued by the CAA on behalf of the Office of Communications; • The user of the equipment holds a Flight Radiotelephony Operators Licence issued by the Civil Aviation Authority. Hardware: The Baofeng radios are $30. For this you get a basic FM radio. The AM airband receiver (if available) is a very basic demodulator and is not a modulator for AM transmission. Even if it was Transmit capable it does not have any filtering, nor does it have any level of spectral purity. In a nutshell it is A: Impossible and B: highly illegal if it were possible. I find it highly unlikely that ANY responsible person would want to transmit on AIRBAND with a $30 radio for any professional reason. [edit] However, and after sleeping on this and realising that my initial reply was a bit of a rant (I apologise) and in the spirit of amateur radio which encourages learning and experimentation, I would add the following… It may well be possible to force the radio to transmit an AM signal by modifying the software but there are two main issues. The first is that Baofeng flash the firmware to the radio at the factory and have historically never issued any updates. Unlike Quansheng and TidRadio no one has been able to develop custom software for Baofeng due to this. People have tried but not really succeeded in modifying the software due to the complexities of how it is initially installed. Secondly, assuming that we in fact could modify the firmware to Tx AM airband the limitations of the hardware itself would not lend itself to any sort of quality output.

Any particular reason for building a filter and then popping it in a plastic case which will propagate magnetic fields beyond the case dimensions? Might a grounded metal case reduce magnetic fields and improve the filter’s overall performance?
@M7EUPАй бұрын
It’s a good question but you are more likely to cause more issues with a metal case in terms of the RF coupling to the case itself.

Does this have weak front-end filters like the Baofengs do? (Like most cheap radios do.)

It’s a sturdy radio with much better filtering than the “Fengs” and the front end is certainly much more robust and not as deaf to strong signals. However, ultimately it’s a handheld and not an expensive base station with complex band pass technology. So I would still avoid pairing it with ridiculous high gain antennas.

What is the electrical purpose of twisting the wires together? Thank you for this video.
@M7EUPАй бұрын
That’s a great question. If you can visualise any interference travelling up one wire and back down the other in opposite directions like ripples heading towards each other in a pond, when they meet they stand a chance of cancelling each other out. Twisting the wires increases that chance. That said, anecdotally people have built these without twisting the wires and seen little difference in performance. However I would always give myself the best chance of reducing any RF so I add the twists.
