There is the same story at the Portsmouth Nuclear Site (PORTS) in Piketon, Ohio. The Dept. of Energy also enriched uranium there. The real tragedy is that they brought in reprocessed high-level radioactive waste and ran it through all the process buildings to extract the uranium in it. That waste contaminated the entire sites of both Paducah and PORTS with transuranics (plutonium, americium, neptunium), various isotopes of uranium, and technetium, among hundreds of other isotopes and toxins. And plenty went, and continues to go, offsite into the air, land, and water.

Lots of people are building new homes in west Paducah like they don't even have a clue. The company and government need to be held responsible for causing heath issues and deaths of so many people. Its just begun! Wait and see...

Below are different levels of massive radiation exposure in a single dose -- all measured in millisieverts -- and their likely effects on humans, as published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: - 50-100: changes in blood chemistry - 500: nausea, within hours - 700: vomiting - 750: hair loss, within 2-3 weeks - 900: diarrhea - 1,000: hemorrhage - 4,000: possible death within 2 months, if no treatment - 10,000: destruction of intestinal lining, internal bleeding and death within 1-2 weeks - 20,000: damage to the central nervous system and loss of consciousness within minutes, and death within hours or days.

Who is he lying? Why does he make references to books and articles if he claims to have nuclear physics knowledge? Well, crowdsourced energy production is a real thing and nuclear is expensive, but everything else is sort of a miss. The cancer wave of the 90's is attributed to extensive use of fossil fuels which emits far more radioactive material than any other form of power generation. The lead in gasoline did not help either. Fukushima was hit by the 4th largest earthquake in modern history and ... it is relatively fine. That is a success story in my book.

Anyone reading. Hello. Have you ever seen a broadcast from NHK World News that stated the government had plans to sell Fukushima rice, under the guise of not labeling it as such. Like just printing Grown in Japan or mixing it from another prefecture, while only claiming the rice came from that other prefecture? The Japanese people were upset. Not sure what was done about it and I can not find that broadcast since. This was several years ago and aired on PBS. Thank you.

At least in Japan their limit is 100Bq. America and Canada is 1,200Bq and 1,000Bq respectively. I mean WTF!?

Do you by chance have the video when NHK World said that the Japanese government was "thinking" about taking the rice grown at Fukushima after the nuclear disaster and selling it off either in it's own bags or mixed with other rices from Japan and not telling the public that any of it came from Fukushima? It aired several years ago and I do not know which year. Most probably three to five years after the disaster. I have been looking for that particular video for ages. Do you have the video by it self or in a compilation or at least know when it was aired? Thank you.

The Japanese decided to accept poorly-designed AP-1000 precursor reactors into Japan from USA. The accident in year 2011 as now permanently ruined Japan with radioactive hot particles. This is the sad reality. Japan would be wise to invest heavily in renewable energy systems now, and not switch on its vulnerable nuclear plants again. Nuclear power in a highly seismically-active region is not prudent. The other issue is that Japan does not have a geologically stable region to act as a longterm repository for nuclear waste (100000 years +). Renewables (wind and solar) are the way forward for Japan, please.

Absolutely not a safety concern. The plant was designed for just this occurrence. Everything worked as designed. But people who have no knowledge, like the "journalist" who doesn't know how to pronounce the word tritium, much less have a hint of a clue as to what it is, are terrified by their ignorance.

Born and raised in Paducah, Kentucky. My grandma Cee Cee passed in the 90's from a tumor on her spine. She was fine. Took a nap, woke up and couldn't move. She never knew the tumor was there. She had raised her family right by that place in Kevil. I know in my heart that plant killed her.

It's only going to get worse. People think that if they can't see poison it's not there. Look at all the people around West Kentucky. We all are dieing of cancer. Government covered it up like it's not a problem. Hospital are building new cancer centers. It's really bad. Stay safe and move far away from Western Kentucky as soon as possible...

It’s because with modern nuclear reactors they are more reliable than wind and solar energy, as nuclear reactors can “throttle “/scale with power demand by raising or lowering the control rods rather than being at the mercy of the elements and having to rely on batteries that are costly and inefficient for energy storage. For those reasons {and more} it was more cost effective and in the government’s interest as it also produces a constant supply of jobs rather than some short term construction/rare maintenance of wind turbines /solar arrays

Sorry Liberals but look at the WHO data of no. of deaths per Trillion kWH of electricity produced. Nuclear power has the lowest number with only 90 deaths worldwide on average per Trillion kWH of electricity. Meanwhile coal has 100,000 deaths per Trillion kWH and solar has 440 deaths per KwH. In fact more people probably die from manufacturing and installing solar panels than from nuclear power accidents! As for nuclear waste, the amount produced is relatively small and we know how to effectively manage with it. However, we don't know how to manage the waste of thousands of old solar panels and batteries involved in large scale renewable energy programs. They will probably end up in landfill sites in 3rd world countries causing more pollution and illnesses. Face the facts: Nuclear is the only viable way of reducing our carbon emissions without paying exorbitant energy bills.
