It's amazing the usefulness of liftbags. I was a commercial diver and often we could have a 100tonne+ piece of structure on liftbags and we'd be merrily moving it about as if a child with a helium balloon. Natures natural crane. I think this is neglected in the training of sport divers. Sure, there'll be some dumb weighbelt lift with a tiny lift bag but if the course included say a tractor tyre or something else divers couldn't lift, it would go a long way in showing new divers what can really be done and the marvelous world they are entering.

Crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci), which feed on large swaths of western Pacific coral reefs, are notable unidirectional regenerators. Starfish of this invasive species are extremely difficult to eradicate because of their ability to regrow when half or more of the original starfish is intact.

Although good intentions, unfortunately this could be making the problem worse. COT’s are broadcast spawners. Their response when threatened is to release all of their eggs. Usually best to remove it from the water prior to culling populations. Also really good to do invertebrate surveys and coral predator surveys. Especially here in Hawaii, they can be very good for a reef, clearing up lesser resilient corals, so that new juvenile corals can grow.

Isn't all that bare rock supposed to have life on it? Also, why's the coral all rock-like, sandy, small, and white? Answer: Yes, bc of decades of fossil-fuel burning, over fishing, and literally pumping millions (if not billions) of tons of pollution into the oceans every year.
@OceanJanitors8 күн бұрын
That spot is a reef like shelf! A lot of times there are large waves that crash over it! The waves keep anything from growing on it for the most part. When the coral turns white, it is dead. This can happen from the water being too warm or from crown of thorns. Hope that covered everything aloha! thanks for watching. 🤙🤙
