I think the poison testing theory is the most logical. Unbeknownst to the group the soviet union could have been testing the poison and it settled onto the ground. The reason Udachenko survived may have been based on positioning, if they were walking in a single file line they would've all walked through the same patches of ground but if they were spread out they would not have. So possibly they walk spread out, the first guy to die walks over a patch of ground with poison, disturbing the poison and kicking into the air around him breathing it in and begins to die. Leader of the group rushes over, kicking up more poison and starts dying too since she runs into the poison cloud the first guy made. The newly disturbed poison floats over to the others and infects them and Udachenko isnt in the path of the wind and so she lives. As for why she might change her story it may have been due to misremembering, im not 100% sure
