Has anything shifted or become unlevel do to tree growth or anything?
@ChrisMoran13 жыл бұрын
All seems level still, but the tree is growing in girth, so I'm worried about the slow bowing of the main beams. Worst case, I'll brace it and expand the distance of the beams - somehow - to give more life.

Did you use TABs for the initial braces? Looks awesome!
@ChrisMoran13 жыл бұрын
I did not. Crazy expensive at the time. If I were to build it now, having a little more disposable income, I'd go with TABs. I'm using lag screws.

I wish we saw it up close to see the bolts used to put up the 1st two long boards. Looks like they held from the bottom cupped on drilled in the center of the wood

I meant for the 3rd part to show more details, I've just been a ridiculous slacker in making it. There are insets on the underneath of the beams that both keep it from floating off in either direction.

Minimum three to one on any cantilevered space please. So for a two foot cant you need six feet on the other side. Music is strangely intoxicating.

What was the size of your joists and maximum cantilever? Did you use 2’ spacing?
@ChrisMoran13 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean re the 2' spacing. If by cantilever you mean how far beyond the sides does the structure extend, about 4 feet on the bottom platform. It's a little wide, but there are caps under the beams where the lag screws are to counter and rotational movement. I'm not light and haven't felt much notable tilt while standing at the extremes.

This ended up being around $2000-ish, including the solar stuff. If I started it over, I'd spend more for Tree Attachment Bolts and a few better options.

The fact that you built it all by yourself is amazing. And it all looks fantastic. But I did notice the two beams ( not sure what size) had started to bow,and that was before you completed the hole lot. And there’s some serious over hang that you might won’t to support at some point . I’m in no way knocking your work, try doubling up them beams from in side the two trees and out side. .. remember during winter periods that little house is going to get heavier with snow on top and let’s not forget the extra weight added by putting bits and bobs up there..
@ChrisMoran13 жыл бұрын
The metal roof actually helps the snow fall off pretty well. The bowing will be an issue, so I'll decide if I want to fix it or take it down. It doesn't get as much use as I'd have expected. The overhang is compensated in part by some caps under the bolts.

Chris, great house! Just a quick question, what was the distance between the two trees, outside and inside, and what size lag bolts did you use to fasten the floor joists to the tree? Thanks!
@ChrisMoran16 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! Oh man, going from memory, I think the inside distance was about 10 feet. Each tree has a diameter of about 25 inch, so about 14 feet outside to outside. The lag screws are 10 inch 3/4" diameter. Anything else? :)
@rickdeckard98106 жыл бұрын
That's terrific you went all out with metal roof and solar, just need a toilet and running water :)
@ChrisMoran16 жыл бұрын
Yeah, frankly, for the weight and ease, I think the metal roof might be cheaper in the end. Roofing shingles would have been HEAVY. No on the toilet... one room, would be awkward if multiple people were in there. ;) Running water... well, I've thought about capturing rain water on the roof and possibly making some carbon filter setup, but in the end, other than "because I can", I couldn't justify it. The solar... yeah, totally justifiable... and if I get my but in gear to get the next video made, it'll be a walk through with the lights and fan and other stuff. Thanks!!

@markwinslett92956 жыл бұрын
Excellent job! Now that your treehouse has been up for a while, do you think it needs support for the overhanging sides? I've been planning out a very similar set up for one, but figured I would need support for those sides hanging off of the main supports. Is it super stable just as is? Thanks!

@ChrisMoran16 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay - I don't get notifications on comments. :( The side don't seem to be a problem. I guess if there was a bunch of people hanging out in a small space on the edge of one, it would tilt, but the braces on the underside of the would keep it from lifting more than maybe a centimeter. Might only feel weird, but so far has been good. I wouldn't call it "stable", since it floats. When the wind blows hard, the trees sway and the structure also does somewhat. The upstairs/house part is definitely more stable though. Any other questions?

love this! if not to personal about how much $ did you spend on the supplies? looking at building one as a Christmas gift. Thanks!
@ChrisMoran16 жыл бұрын
Oh man... at this point, I'm not sure. Not a ton, but likely *all said and done*, nearly $1500-2000 is my guess. Spread out over the years, it's really not too bad. The 2@ 2x12x12' were the single most expensive items, I think. Did NOT need 2x12. 2x10s would have been sufficient. If you've not seen the second part, it should make more clear the expenses. The solar panel was about $45 in parts (cells, "wire", and found materials in the garage. I tried to use what I had for as much as possible. If I had designed the bottom level as just a rectangle, there would have been a good deal less waste in decking. Hope that gives a general idea.

My son does enjoy some time up there. A few more details to complete and it should be comfy. As for the music, my ego hopes it's not because you hate it, because the trax in this one are mine. They are a bit old: soundcloud.com/technosnake "Come Away" and "Zoids"

Theres one thing that i love about this work. The fact that it is taking it's time to develop... kind of like a tree does. I belive this timeframe might have a positive effect on your kid, as he learns to appreciate the value of things. Or, might just be me romanticizing... As for the song, now i understand why shazam was not being helpful! I like it a lot! It sounded like Kraftwerk and AphexTwin (hope you take it as a compliment!) Will surely take some time to listen to your music folder! Keep it up!

That's a great point. Whether he gets it or not is to be seen. I do have him help when I can. He helped paint the walls and I'll have him help install the USB outlets in the walls. You are too kind wrt the music. Kraftwrrk and RDJ have always been favorites. The snippet tracks I've made over the last decade could total an album... I'm just not focused enough.
