IIRC there's a line later where Newman says something like< "My daddy thinks oil is for makin' salad dressing..." Around twenty years later, Newman started his own line of food products, Newman's Own. The first product they rolled out? Salad dressing.

Not the worst process shot I've seen. Anyway, Coco Chanel needed money so as a little girl she went to work in a chemist shop and taught herself to make perfumes. Turned in into an empire.

Patricia's favorite (very brief) scene from Hud was cut by he director. Lonnie asks her "What is life about, Alma?" "Honey, you are asking the wrong person." When she won best actress in this role I'm sure they regretted every minute of screen time they cut of her.

This movie was filled with great acting. I know a guy that used to be like Hud. He is old now and got his life right with God. People still remember his antics though.

Hud was meant to be unlikeable because he's immoral. The whole point of the movie was Lon having to choose whether to follow his granddad's way or Hud's.

I grew up in the town this movie was filmed in. Filmed the year I started first grade. Town name on the water tower was changed. The town was actually Claude Texas, 30 miles east of Amarillo. The ranch house they used was at a little town 12 miles east of Claude, Goodnight Texas. The house is still there, it's been bricked and all grown up with trees around it.

@Ivan Renard I agree. I was just saying that James Dean was the much bigger star after "Giant" and "Rebel without a cause" came out and was going to play the lead role in the movie about Rocky Graziano. There is a good chance that he would of got some of the roles that newman ended up playing.

If Hud had been played by Rod Steiger (given the amount of drinking Hud does in this movie, that's what the Huds of the world look like) we would not see Hud as some sort of anti hero rebel and see him for what he was, a sociopathic heel who rejects any opportunity to bond with anyone on a deep level. Paul Newman was great in this movie and should've won the oscar for best actor, but if you ignore his handsome charisma, he was one of the worst movie characters in movies who wasn't a murderer.

Hud’s good looks were the point. It’s what made him so dangerous. This scene is a perfect embodiment. He comes off as charming and humorous right before he sucker punches the clod at the bar. He goads his nephew into a dangerous situation and then saunters over and easily steps into the line of fire. Every time you start to like him, he reminds you that he is a snake. But you can easily see why he gets away with so much.
@joep8787
@joep8787 3 жыл бұрын
You can afford to be a sociopathic a-hole when you look like Paul Newman. There will always be women with which to pass the time. It was good casting. Newman is so handsome and charismatic that many young people of the day saw Hud as a rebel rather than what he was. Someone who drank as much as Hud would've looked more like Rod Steiger who incidentally was about the same age as Paul Newman. Of course, Alma wouldn't have dropped her dishtowel over the sight of a shirtless Rod Steiger.
