What you are saying is very good theoretically but very difficult to apply in the everyday school. How can I do all that for one class! If you could offer examples, I will be happy.

In one kindergarten, if I got docked three points, I wouldn't get a 'Good Day Award' and my dad would spank me so hard when I got home. There was nothing I could do once I lost that final point. I would cry, but the teacher would just put me in time-out. My dad has since shown a lot of remorse and apologized for this, mind you. He just didn't want me to think I could get away with breaking the rules, but he went too far. Don't spank five-year-olds for something they did hours earlier due to lack of impulse control.

As an experienced early childhood educator and teacher, I agree that concrete objects and hands on experiences are very effective. I would move play to the first position. ❤ also routines and rituals , sensory experiences that you mentioned . Nature play should be at core; movement 🏂

As a BIPOC woman, and college professor, I agree with all of this except for the one on Group Work. Indigenous students hate group work assignments because only very rarely does everyone pull their own weight. We also can’t stand break out rooms, which have the same effect as putting us on the ‘hot seat.’ The only exception to these would be a small classroom with students who have known each other for years, similar to what you would see in a Bureau of Indian Education school. If your classroom is mixed with Indigenous students and other ethnic groups, please avoid doing both. It’s not fun, it’s painful to us, and it cancels out any other student engagement that has been working for us. My last tip is remember Indigenous students don’t speak up a lot because they are thinking and processing what you are saying-you are the expert in the classroom, and they want to give you the correct answer to your questions, not the first one off the top of their head.

Creating an inclusive environment in the classroom is essential for fostering a sense of belonging and engagement among all students, regardless of their backgrounds, abilities, or learning styles. There are several key strategies that teachers can implement to build such an environment: 1. Know Your Students: One of the foundational elements of creating an inclusive classroom is understanding who your students are-both individually and as a group. This means learning about their cultural backgrounds, interests, strengths, and areas for growth. Building positive relationships with students allows teachers to tailor their instruction to meet diverse needs, while also ensuring that every student feels valued and understood. Teachers can take time to engage in conversations with students, get to know their preferences and goals, and incorporate that knowledge into lesson plans. 2. High Academic Expectations: An inclusive classroom should set high academic expectations for all students, regardless of their starting points or abilities. Research shows that when teachers believe in their students' potential and challenge them with rigorous, but achievable goals, students are more likely to perform at their highest level. High expectations communicate to students that they are capable of success and help promote a growth mindset, where effort and perseverance lead to improvement. Teachers should also provide the support and resources needed for students to reach these expectations, whether through differentiated instruction, scaffolding, or personalized feedback. 3. Display Student Culture in the Classroom: To make a classroom truly inclusive, it’s important to create an environment that reflects and celebrates the diverse cultures, traditions, and experiences of the students within it. This can be achieved by displaying student work, incorporating cultural artifacts, and honoring holidays and traditions from a variety of backgrounds. It also means being mindful of how diverse cultural perspectives can enrich discussions and lesson content. By making students' cultural identities visible and respected in the classroom, teachers help foster a sense of pride and belonging, which in turn can motivate students to engage more deeply with the learning process. 4. Incorporate Visuals in the Classroom: Visual aids are an important tool for making learning accessible and engaging for all students, particularly those with diverse learning needs. Visuals can include posters, charts, diagrams, interactive displays, and digital resources that provide students with visual representations of the material being taught. Incorporating visuals supports various learning styles, especially for visual learners, and can help make complex concepts more understandable. Additionally, it provides students with different entry points into the content, allowing them to engage with the material in ways that resonate with them. For English language learners (ELLs), visual cues can also support language comprehension and promote vocabulary acquisition. By integrating these strategies-knowing students as individuals, setting high academic standards, celebrating cultural diversity, and using visual tools-teachers can create a classroom environment where every student feels included, respected, and empowered to succeed.

Kochi (Nov 09,2024) The Kerala high court, while quashing a criminal case against a school teacher, has ruled that when cases are filed against them, the intention (mens rea) behind such punishments is to be examined. A copy of my letter today in this regard to the Malayala Manorma newspaper on this subject for the information of all parents, teachers and students. "Sir, Your report in the paper today regarding the HC judgement on teacher - student relationship. I guess the parents of the student need to read this article that our news tabloid carried on this vital issue. Kindly ensure that it reaches his parents, if not at least his school concerned."
