Not true. According to Anna Kiesenhofer herself,(in an interview in Velonews*, not only did Annamiek speak with her personally before the medal ceremony, but she also called Anna directly the next day and the two spoke at length; and each has also saluted the other on the other’s respective Instagram account. So here’s a grown-up moment for you: if Anna Kiesenhofer (and everyone else involved) is good with it, why aren’t you? It’s probably also a good time for a reasonability check (pay attention): Other than Cecilia Uttrup Ludwig, no one, Dutch or otherwise, was seen to congratulate Kiesenhofer, at least on the live feed. That doesn’t mean they did - or didn’t- yet we don’t seem to be holding any of the other sixty riders accountable for their apparent/assumed bad behavior…or do we hold the Dutch to a different standard? And if the Dutch were slow to get over to Anna Kiesenhofer after the race, perhaps considering what they had just lost and how they had lost it, it would be somewhat understandable. This was their race to lose, and they had managed to lose it in spectacular fashion. Van Vleutin, who we all remember had almost killed herself in 2016 (check how many times in the comments on clips of that crash people write, “I thought I had seen someone die.”) while leading the Olympic road race by what would have been an almost insurmountable margin, postponed her retirement for four years - five as it worked out - skipped the Giro and La Course this year to prep for this road race, and then lost the gold medal in what Lanterne Rouge aptly termed “a fuck-up of monumental proportions”. If there was a sense of shock and disbelief among the Dutch (and most of the others), perhaps it was understandable that they were a little slow to congratulate Anna.
