also please do not touch square space. This is horrid. Use framer or webflow if youre going to create a site. Otherwise use figma for actual prototyping
@UXCoffeeChat10 ай бұрын
Each to it's own. Webflow & framer/figma has a steeper learning curve. I like Squarespace because it's a middle ground. But I know some people who landed a role in a big company using Xfolio or Adobeportfolio so it isn't a one size fits all. Understanding your needs and pros & cons of each platform can help someone make a desicion.

omfg lol. Theres no such thing as stealing in design?! Please redact that from the record. Absolutely NOT true. 🤦🏻♂. And calling it "inspiration" doesnt suddenly change its definition. Inspiration is inspired *from* work, and stealing is using *the* work as your own. Dont do that. Absolutely DO take notes from other work but your objective should be to fit the brand youre working on, fitting the elements to actually meet the objective of the product.
@UXCoffeeChat10 ай бұрын
Yes you're right. We see stolen art all the time. Context behind this that wasn't explained is a lot of us are afraid to implement things we see other designers do as we categorize it as stealing and we put so much pressure to come up with the best solution from scratch. Good point.

I find the feedback that you won’t really entertain portfolios on PDF odd, a lot of Senior UX designers work on applications, not web. We don’t spend as much time on portfolios, nor send as many applications as juniors. Instead of showing we know how to design, we have a body of developed and shipped work. A nice PDF made in Figma or Sketch should be as valid as anything else
@UXCoffeeChat11 ай бұрын
Hi! Thanks for pointing this out. I always tell everyone I talk to take everything I say with a grain of salt. Nothing is right or wrong. I base my feedbacks from the pool of people I have talked to including recruiters - which is a very small pool comparatively. So not everything I say will apply to everyone so I'm glad that you pointed this out. There are a few reasons why I do suggest a website though. In my research senior designer and entry level portfolios are quite different. Mainly because as an entry level designer we don't have "real world" experiences. I felt that I needed all the upper hand I can get over all the other entry level and junior designers who's been in the field for a few years already. When I was going through the career change these were some factors which led me to believe a website is the way to go: 1. Better usability. PDF in general is harder to navigate than a website. Website allows the reader to navigate around more easily. If I can make it just that much easier for the recruiter to view my works and navigate around, I found the effort to be worth the potential result. 2. Website can hold multiple case studies and other sections we want to put in. As a career changer this helped me tell me career story and what my previous experiences can bring to the table. (About me sections, a section for my resume - not a parsed version recruiter usually gets, and a introduction section). Not saying you can't do this in PDF but a website makes it easier to build and navigate. 3. I find it easier to present off of a website vs a PDF. I find PDF hard to zoom in/out and scroll depending on the application it's opened in. Long story short, I find websites to be more useable and if that helps me as an entry level designer competing against hundreds of other applicants, then I'll take it. With that said, I don't think there is a right or wrong. PDF made from figma is definitely faster and with more freedom. Maybe even a prototype is a way to go too - $free.99, more freedom to build/design, easy to navigate, opens on browser. Thanks for commenting and making me think about this topic!

Hi! It's called UX coffee hours: storage.googleapis.com/uxcoffeehours.com/site/index.html. If it deletes the URL then you can google 'UX coffee hour' and it should be the first one to pop up. the URL says googleapis.

What are your thoughts on putting a case study on medium and sending that as a link to recruiters? I am working on a portfolio but for the meantime while applying I am thinking about making a case study on medium so I can show them a case study somewhere.
@UXCoffeeChat Жыл бұрын
I think using it as an interim can be a perfect use case. But also consider how long it will take to create the case study on medium and if the time is better spent on putting it in the portfolio website. The website can be worked on iteratively so it doesn't have to be 100% finished before it's done.

thanks. also it's one case study, should I lauch the website with just one or wait till I get at least 3 of them?@@UXCoffeeChat
@UXCoffeeChat Жыл бұрын
Launch it! Projects needing work is better than no work cause it's waiting to be perfected! What I would do is launch the first case study and get a lot of feedback for it. This will help you create the others quickly and better on the first go. Also you can post the other case studies and put a *coming soon* and remove the hyperlink so that they can't see your in progress case studies.

Thank you so much for the thorough review of the portfolio. I have a question. You stated that the solution (major turning point) of developing a separate APP should be highlighted. (about 16 minutes). Where should the emphasis be placed? on the overview section? or part of guerrilla testing? Thank you.
