Mixed feelings about that Doug. It is a beautiful place being wrecked by drive ins who care nothing for the place. You can canoe or kayak to it

Crossing that area by way of kayak or canoe could be dangerous due to the amount of current. I think most people appreciate the island and what it provides. Thanks so much for watching Brother!! 👊🏻👍🏻

i have a lot of memories of this bridge ... none of them good. I was involved in the commissioning of the control system. Some of this was done over a phone line, when I was on vacation, from my hotel room in Florida. Best wishes in getting an alternate to the old girl.

I cycle on the Island 5 or 6 times a year. Building a 2 lane swing bridge is the best idea. It pays homage to the current bridge and it resolves the biggest problem: the single lane. Opening for 15 minutes every hour isn't the problem (and it's almost never that long), the problem is waiting at the lights for your side's turn to go across. There's a huge lineup in the summer months.

At 110 years old I think we got good value from the existing bridge. However the way budgeting and highway construction projects seem to be progressing slowly, especially in the North, I doubt we will driving any new bridge to LC in the next ten or even twenty years.

The swing bridge at Wasauksing First Nation in Parry Sound shares a history similar to this swing bridge. Parry Sound and Wasauksing are both shipping ports with large cruise line ships being the only ones docking now. The swing bridge was a train access to Wasauksing to transport logs and other goods. There was a fuel depot in Parry Sound which was brought in by ships.

Moved parts for 24 wind turbines over that bridge years ago. It was a tight fit. We also built a switch yard on Goat Island to take the power to the 115KV main line. The power cables went under the North Channel to the switch yard. We controlled that 60 MW farm from a control room outside of Kingston. I spent about 1 year going back and forth over that bridge. Sad to see it go.

I drove over that bridge twice, back in 1975, when I spent a weekend scuba diving on Manitoulin Island. One thing I find curious is Hwy 6 crosses it. You'd think it would have ended at Tobermory, with a new number across the island & bridge to Espanola. It's the only instance I'm aware of where a highway includes a ferry boat. 🙂

@@PinetreeLine Yep, it runs from Port Dover, on Lake Erie, through Hamilton & Guelph to Tobermory. You then have to take the ferry over to Manitoulin, to continue along to Espanola.

I currently use the older model built into my Toy Hauler. However, I’m a Camp Chef fan personally and love their modular stoves. It’s just too much to drag the big P90X around all the time so I was looking to pick up one of their Versatop 2X stoves, which also fit the camp chef 16 inch accessories (they also make a smaller Blackstone equivalent). What I found was that Camp Chef for whatever strange reason never got Canadian compliance done on their table top products so you have to pick them up in the states and bring them back across. On a side note the Blackstone does fit the Camp Chef 14” accessories so we use the Camp Chef BBQ box on our Blackstone for things we don’t want to griddle, works great.
