The sensor measures displacement within its measuring range. If you take a POLARIS 10 sensor, you have a measuring range of 10 mm, starting with an offset of 51 mm in front of the housing. If you combine two sensors at a known distance, measuring the same object from opposite directions, you get a difference. This may be the thickness of a board or a strip of metal. It's just a principle to show how distance changes the reflection on the CCD. In reality the spot has a Gaussian brightness distribution. Our sensors calculate the "centre of gravity" to define the measurement value.

The laser rays that reach the CCD are just those which cross the center of the lens? What happen to the rays that come from other directions?
