Notice at about 9:08, Richard sends out a big attack force of swordsmen just as the Wazir’s men close in. Had Richard kept those swordsmen and pikemen at his keep to defend him, he just *might* have made it.

I made the mistake of trying to fend off Caliph's slaves with crossbowmen (epic damage, but too slow). Once I invested in some archers instead (less damage, but way faster) my fire problem was over!

Don't forget that some AI Lords are stronger than others. This can be measured by the amount of dots above their health bar. e.g. Rat is far weaker than Wolf.
