@@DeafMarsh Ah, that makes sense. It’s a crossover between Final Fantasy and Disney (Square and Disney shared an office building in Tokyo), but it has its own original story with a ton of original characters.

So you know Cloud and Sephiroth in Smash? They’re from a Japanese game series called Final Fantasy. Kingdom Hearts is a crossover between Final Fantasy and Disney, with a very large cast of original characters. It’s really good; I’d recommend checking it out.

Yeah, just play the games yourself in order. Maybe occasionally check KZbin if you need a refresher. Also watch a video of the story scenes from the mobile games since they've been taken down (yes, there's somewhat important lore in the mobile games for some reason). There is one game that's intentionally confusing because the characters don't know what's going on so neither do we. Once we get a vital information reveal, then everything starts to make sense. So, yeah, the story is a little convoluted, but it's not as confusing as the comedy on the internet makes it out to be. Just don't try and take in a story that's been going for 20+ years in only 30 minutes, and you should be good.

It's a crossover with Final Fantasy (directed by Tetsuya Nomura) so FF fans are the first thing that comes to mind. But KH has real-time combat, so if you're a fan of the older Final Fantasy games' turn-based system, you may be disappointed. Instead, Kingdom Hearts is considered one of the best Hack and Slash series on the market. (Half the players only play for the gameplay.) Even the combat from the first game still holds up today. It's similar to the combat in modern Final Fantasy games, while still being its own thing. Obviously the other half is Disney fans, but those are films so it doesn't have a big effect on the gameplay. The Disney and Final Fantasy characters have been secondary to the main plot for a long time now, so most people that only play for the story play for the original cast of characters (Sora, Roxas, Aqua, etc.) If you're wondering about the age demographics, the first couple were made primarily for children, yet had some REALLY dark stuff for kids' games, (Human experimentation, child offing himself on screen, first game doesn't even really have a happy ending, etc.) in addition to really difficult gameplay. However, they quickly realized their main demographic was teens and adults so they started making it with that in mind, but it's still not to the point where it's technically inappropriate for children.
