i think State Of Grace is a great summary of how Red is Taylor Swift with every inch. That song perfectly captures how taylor views love and see every sight of it:red, blue, black, white, grey. frustration,passion,jealousy,loyalty,honesty,peace... her life, her sight of love, her relationships and everything about her is so beautifully placed in that song and every word on that album.

Patti Smith has a memoir about her time with photographer Robert Maplethorpe titled “Just Kids”. Not necessarily an intentional reference, but it was my first thought, given the name check in track two.

Like so many others have said in the comments - looking back and re listening to Folklore and Midnights has really opened my eyes to maybe how many other Matty songs there are. The 1 - " you know the greatest films of all time were never made" & " for digging up the grave another time" Snow on the Beach- "One night, a few moons ago I saw flecks of what could've been lights" & " But your eyes are flying saucers from another planet" Glitch- as you said which I'm now convinced is a MH song. Cardigan- When she performed with the 1975 and she came out styled like the folklore era but was in her Midnights era - she performed Anti Hero and The City - I think you queried this on your Patreon video. Her hair was styled to look exactly or very similar to how she has her hair in the Cardigan music video. Plus the whole of Cardigan when you think about MH fits. "When you are young the assume you know nothing" "Tried to change the ending Peter Losing Wendy" " But I knew you would linger like a tattoo kiss" And who knows how many other songs... I will say this Midnights has always confused me and isn't one of my top albums- unless you include the 3am tracks and then it's SUPERIOR 😂However knowing all this information now and re listening to midnights makes me understand and enjoy it so much more! Thank for your videos I love you breaking down the songs it makes so many other things click into place!

Also whilst learning about the Waltz found this... Waltz was considered vulgar and called the “Forbidden Dance” due to the close hold of the dance. The Times of London even put out a warning to parents after the dance appeared at a ball thrown by the Prince Regent in 1816.

LOML = Love of My Life. loml = loss of my life. The latter is sadder, the tone of the superior tune. That's my humble interpretation, anyway. I love this song. It hits me hard and soft in the feels! (I have TTPD and Hit Me Hard and Soft exclusively lately on my mp3 player.)

I also think how abruptly the song ends after “loss of my life” is so fitting that the relationship ended so quickly

"It's legendary" also makes me think of fairy tales and "true love at first sight." another lyric about being destined to be together, "from one kiss to getting married." also "killing time at the cemetery" makes me think of Peter "the goddess of timing once found us beguiling. Peter was she lying? My ribs get the feeling she did" not only could they not die, but Time was dying every time they got back together because they were trying to rekindle the past for something that should be buried, that time no longer found beguiling

Lion just needed courage, tin man wanted the heart. Maybe the man is lacking both and a brain considering all the tea in this song 😂

Two things: 1) I think it sounds familiar to you because it’s ridiculously similar to white horse. 2) I think she chose the acronym to *purposely* make it seem colloquial and less serious. In my opinion (not claiming this is absolute fact), I think she wrote this in the THICK of being broken hearted that Matty left. Then with time and some fathoming, she realized that he was actually the smallest man who ever lived and what the heck was she thinking (which is backed up by her calling this time with him “temporary insanity”). She purposely made it an informal acronym and didn’t make it the track 5 because I think she realized this wasn’t actually the loss of her life at all and instead a very good thing that led her to something way better so when she went to place it on the album, she probably laughed at the idea of him being the loss of her life and decided to use the acronym for the fun of the switch but also to mirror the amount of seriousness she looks at this song with now with time and healing. 🫶

I've been waiting to discuss this with someone: In loml (about Matty), they "know the steps anyway" to the Waltz. BUT, in How did it End? (about Joe), "we learned the right steps to different dances". that dichotomy says a lot😭THE SYMBOLISM! The artistry 😭

Before I realized the comma, I thought Taylor was saying “your arsons match your somber eyes” as one statement. IE, the sadness, the wreckage, the chaos of all the shit you’ve lit on fire, remind me of your somber eyes

Still my favourite from TTPD and that’s very unusual for me, usually the rankings/faves change with time as I get more familiar with the songs. But this is such a masterpiece and by far the one with the widest variety of interpretations that all make sense that I’ve seen. Love this song so much!

“Nick of time” is also a movie from 1995 starring Johnny Depp, whose suit and tie look in the film predates Matty’s image.

I would also like to point out that Taylor being intentional with using “impressionist painting” as impressionist art is a specific type of art movement whereby artist tried capturing FLEETING moments (such as sunsets etc.) as quickly as they could so it included a lot of quick brushstrokes… which further emphasises the fleeting and volatile and fast, ever-changing nature of this relationship 🤗

If it means what I think it means, I'm sorry Bonny that you're experiencing this song irl rn :( but at least it's leading to the fathoming of a superior track!

My favorite reading of the line "When your impressionist paintings of Heaven/Turned out to be fakes/Well, you took me to hell, too" is that impressionist painting requires the artist to have been in the location that they were painting. The style being a very fast "impression" of a moment that can only be captured in the place where the moment is happening. Implying that he promised he had *been* to heaven and could take her there too. But he only actually took her to hell. After all, his paintings were of heaven were fake because he never saw heaven, ie he was always lying about their future together. :) this song is SO GOOD.

In the last chorus, i felt that "was a lion" was meant to sound like "wasnt lying", which would link to the next line of "combing through the braids of lies". Also maybe she only said what loml meant at the end to bring us through her experience of this relationship via our experience listening to the song - we spend the whole time trying to define whar loml was, until the song ends, and you only know that you "lost" something

i don’t know if anyone has said this before but impressionism is all about what the object looks like under a certain light, the condition of the object in one given condition. she could be saying that the impressionist painting a of heaven were fake because they were only heaven under the conditions that he made it to be heaven. idk if that makes any sense but it does in my head lmao. also impressionism was also about capturing the feeling or experience of a situation or object instead of an accurate depiction of it. again tying into the fact that it’s fake

Just fathoming this could be about Matty too, I’d always thought the time we were away was referring to the on/off times like Afterglow and The Great War or her and Joe trying to make it work at the end, staying too long, clinging on etc, and the steal your girl bit was a throwback to Getaway car era where she ended up with Joe after all that. Still torn haha but this makes a lot of sense too.

I’ve always taken ‘the ink bleeds’ as a reference to the painting being fake. High quality, authentic paintings will have very defined lines, whereas fake, low quality often means the ink bleeds and is a key sign that the painting is a fake. Does that make any sense at all?

The song loml is my favorite song off the two albums. It incapsulates how broken he made her feel and what a con he was. She amazes me with her writing and I feel quite triggered anytime someone says she isn't an excellent writer. Your comment about how they probably don't understand what she is writing made me feel better though. Thank you both for an excellent review!
