Do you get head catches in the coffee can set years back in the 90s I saw a #10 can set using 110s there was actually a template to make tabs in such a way that the top of the trap jaws didnt actually move, so you would get high neck/ head catches and not have to worry about bringing the trap/animal home,but that was years ago the trapper claimed he trapped predominately in the black spruce Knolls,and actually did an experiment basically he cut one side of his trigger wire and put a hollow twig on the remaining wire and according to him his catch rate went nuts, it would seem like alot more work, but if you had them already baited and set ready to go might be pretty fast. Excellent content!!!😊

I love the can sets! I have a template that shows where to cut the can so that the trap fits inside of it

What makes a good location for any type of marten trap?

Marten prefer old growth, forest and mountainous terrain but you can find them in lower elevations

The one I have my buddy made for me. I’m not sure if there’s a place you can buy them. I’ll ask him when he gets out of the mountains if he would be willing to sell you one if u want

That would be greatly appreciated. I use mainly number nine wire for wolves.

Very long cable on the trap, if you catch marten or squirrel, fox or cayot can take your trophy!😉
@theealaskanviking5257 Жыл бұрын
Some of the cable on my traps were a bit to long and I had to cut it down a bit

Great how to video with a couple different types of sets! I really like the visual of the cd hanging. Do you find it improves catch rate? I never thought of the visual aspect for marten but use it with lynx sets but never occurred that it’s one more sense of the animal so why wouldn’t it help.
@theealaskanviking52572 жыл бұрын
I definitely feel it helps! Especially when it starts getting really cold and lure doesn’t have the same pungent smell.

New to trapping. Live in Anchorage and have only got 2 marten so far. Are marten more active in November and December or are they relatively consistent through the end of season? Also, do you have better success with the skunky lure vs. a more mild non-skunky lure? Or is it all about the bait? Thanks.
@theealaskanviking52572 жыл бұрын
Marten move in elevation pending on the weather and primarily stick to a 5 mi.² home range. I prefer the Skunky lure because it holds up better in negative weather. Bait is all about eye appeal. Keep stacking them and build on success
@garretthaponski78262 жыл бұрын
@@theealaskanviking5257 Thanks for the info. Is it that they move up in elevation or down with warmer/colder weather?

The colder it is the higher they tend to go

Very good video on multiple sets, best I’ve seen. Now a subscriber and fan. I use both Hellfire, ghusto and others I like are Skunk junk, and marten magic all are very good in cold temperatures here in far north Minnesota on Canadian border. I do add some feathers by some of my sets as well. Thanks and good luck to you👍

Been in alaska for 2 years and finally was able to duck hunt this season as I was still getting settled in last season. I'm in NorthPole/Fairbanks area and was wondering if you have any general suggestions of where to go in the south central area now that the interior is froze over. (Not asking for your hunting spots haha) I tried looking up info online but not much info outside of our general area.
