Does this mean the 12v electric system won't work without the ignition on continually. I was looking to buy one and use the electric system for a fishing campervan.

System should work without ignition on but there is a 5 hour timeout/low battery voltage relay that will turn the system off. I just removed the complete system and rewired it to my needs, there are a couple of videos on electrics in my Fiat Ducato playlist.

Does the cut off kick in after 5hrs if the battery voltage remains stable. As I would be installing a solar panel to keep the battery charged when parked up.

@@waynelocking2799 It will still time out after 5 hours, you will need to remove it and associated relay from the circuit (direct connection) or fit a manually operated switch to the relay in place of the timer. Easy job for an auto-electrician if your not sure.

Thank you for this. It's very helpful. I get my ex-BT Ducato next week and I'm planning on trying it out with an airbed before I rip out all the racking. Presumably all of this funcitonality runs from the auxhiliary battery? If I drain that battery while I'm in the back of the van will the starter battery be safe or will that get drained too? Also, if I have locked myself in the back of the van, either using the remote or the two central locking buttons on the panel, and then the battery drains - will I be stuck inside the van or does a handle pull release the door? 😂 Really enjoyed your build playlist by the way!

There have been amendments but as far as I know nothing that affects motor caravans. All the information I have seen refers back to the 1979 act. However the DVLA just choose to ignore the act and make their own rules up! i.e. number of windows, decals, awning bars.

I looked at changing my truck to a camper for cheaper registration but there is so much regulation I realised it wasn't worth it, also I like the government not having any records of how I am living my life that you just know will never be used to my benefit, no they are more likely to use it to find a way to hit me with some stupid tax scheme because my home has wheels instead of a foundation. Yes the government created this impossible living situation and they only serve capitalism now so they can all blow me.

Before i bought a van to convert, I looked up on the exeptence and comments i came accros mentioned that rejection was sometimes without merit, But was down to an indivual and what they feel. So i guess its on record that yoiu may be rejected and i doubt that may change. I wanted or liked the IVECO Mini Bus. It was tall and windowed all down both sides. Thinking back now im glad i never went with that, Too many windows. But after doing some reading up and finding that they reject amazing builds, I went with single wheel 3 and a half ton. I dont need a full CPC to operate it and insured it as a camper. Those double wheels means rejection will prevent you driving it on the road without that full CPC. Im HGV Driver, But without this its usuless. Ive seen so many of those same vans parked on driveways for ever. But ill make it clear, When accepted as a camper, Those double wheels dont matter. But is it worth the risk.

As far as I'm aware and I have to qualify my statement that way due to DVLA vagueness, you shouldn't need CPC or tacho if it is fitted out as a camper and insured/used as such. DVLA have actually said you can use it any way you please without the need to reclassify. I've been watching and researching this issue for some time and I'm planning on a tag axle 5 tonne van. I've heard some large converters are even having their vans rejected for motor caravan.

Why is everyone so set on getting motorcaravan for body type ? My ex ambulance is listed on the V5 as box van, insurance don't care i still have it insured as a "motorhome ", DVSA mot it as a motor caravan, and as it's a HGV i only pay £160 VED per year, what's the issue ?
@InTheShedUK
@InTheShedUK 15 күн бұрын
You're lucky in that your vehicle is HGV (non-articulated, under 7.5 tonnes) so you won't get a NIP if an ANPR clocks you going over 60mph on a motorway, unlike a converted commercial panel van (unless it has a body type 'motor caravan') can.

@m1cxf MOT test has nothing to do with the body type on the V5, the vehicle is tested as presented, if it has the required fitments as shown in the MOT requirements IE bed, fixed seating, cooker and sink, the tester will test it as a motor caravan, my V5 states "box van" and is a HGV (4.25t) but is tested every year as a normal car (class 4) . Speed limits? Drive slower or do the research and buy the correct vehicle to start with 🤔 As for VAT, it Doesn't apply to private sales only to VAT registered businesses, how many VAT registered businesses deal in DIY built motor caravans, not many, too risky selling vehicles without safety certs ect

Many towns now seem to despise campervans and motorhomes, witness the now common no motorcaravans parking or overnighting in many coastal towns in UK. But, a stealth van with two dark windows and no decals can get away with it, it's not a motorcaravan. The diesel heater exhaust is not conspicuous, just the water or ecu inlet if fitted externally. Better off with the van with windows designation in my opinion

I'm not worried about re registering my van as a campervan, I've found no difference in insurance quotes between a home built van and a home built campervan. There is the question over speed limits, Within the Road Traffic Act The Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) (Great Britain) Regulations 1979 for the definition of a motorcaravan. This reads; a motor vehicle which is constructed or adapted for the carriage of passengers and their effects and which contains, as permanently installed equipment, the facilities which are reasonably necessary for enabling the vehicle to provide mobile living accommodation for its users. Essentially the Road Traffic Act is a law, the DVLA is a classification and the law trumps a classification (this is an abridged version of a really interesting article by Jerba Campervans blog titled Campervan, Van With Windows & Motorcaravan Speed Limits (2020/2021 Update) Now the cherry on Jerba's cake is they include details of a legal test case between a member of the public and Deveon & Cornwall Police. So as far as I'm concerned, the question of DIY camper conversion speed limits has been addressed by a judge, and I confidently drive up to the stated speed limits. Now as a side issue I'm currently working on an ex BT ducato the same as yours, and it has an uprated suspension, I seem to get a lot of bangs from the rear if i go over bumpy roads, and I wonder if it's just because there is no load to speak of on the suspension as I haven't built this one yet. It passed MOT with no mention of any suspension issues. at first I thiught it was the rear doors, so I replaced all the seals, and the doors feel rock solid. Happy to hear any thoughts you or anyone else has. (I'm not a mechanic)
@InTheShedUK
@InTheShedUK Ай бұрын
Yes I know about that legislation (video coming soon also the REAL reason why DVLA are reluctant to reclassify) but the problem is ANPR will just read your reg number and issue a NIP based on records held by DVLA, this has happened, you then have to PROVE that your van is a leisure vehicle to avoid the fine, wasting not only your time but that of the authorities. Would be much simpler if DVLA just gave you the correct classification in the first place. I did have some banging but it was from the rear doors, the stops just needed some adjustment. I would say the MOT should have shown any major issues with suspension.

Did you have to use the press to seat the hub in the basket that final bit? I don't have a press, I'm wondering if torquing down the nut would have taken up that last bit of play you were hammering down, or is it crucial to get it fully seated before putting it on the bike? I noticed you replaced a lot of the clutch hub parts. How much more would it have cost you to buy the pr-made hub on line? I think they're under 200 bucks here in the states. I need to replace the rubbers in mine and I'm thinking I'll probably just replace the entire hub and save myself some trouble. Not sure I have the proper tools to get those rubbers out and replaced. I'll make my decision after I inspect the hub off the bike.

Yes I did use the press, I am building from bits of various bikes and new parts, you may not need a press if your clutch is all original. You could tighten on the bike if the hub is almost there.
