Was this an attempt to stir controversy by calling the writing Macedonian and not Greek? At least he could’ve said it was Doric, the Greek Dialect of ancient state of Macedonia spoke, the same dialect of the spartans.

@Ntopias2 жыл бұрын
As a Macedonian Greek I don't find it offensive at all. He describes it as Macedonian which is factually accurate as Alexander's nationality/Kingdom and Empire was just "Macedonian", he is pointing out that it belongs to the Macedonian dynasty of rulers in Egypt which started with Alexander and continued with the Ptolemaic dynasty. There was no Greek empire or kingdom until 1832. You believe Macedonia to be Greek but get offended when people don't insert the word "Greek" into everything? You've got to be from outside of Macedonia for sure, 100%.

@Ntopias2 жыл бұрын
@@diogeniscruyff1084 There is a big difference. Greek is a modern nationality, Hellene is an ancient culture and religion of people who believe they are descendants of Hellen. Modern Greeks are Orthodox Christian and don't follow these pagan practices. The only similarities are that the modern Greek language is heavily based on Hellenistic Koine which continued through the generations with the Bible. Other than that, before the War of Independence we used to call ourselves Romans (Romaioi) and Koine was called Romaiki, and this is something that carried on since the East Roman Byzantine Empire through the Ottoman Empire. Because we were Christians, and as a Christian to associate yourself with Paganism is frowned upon. Our nationality was always Roman and nobody wanted anything to do with Hellenism until Greece and Greek nationalism became a thing. And "same blood" is hilarious and ridiculous after 2,000 years of migrations. Nobody is pure, most are from later migrations from the Middle East, Anatolia, Albanians, Slavs, etc. But I'm not surprised if you believe that you are pure, you seem like the type - The ultra-nationalist idiots that plague KZbin, Twitter, and Facebook. Yep, you're definitely not from Makedonia.

@@Ntopias Alexander the great the Greek the Ellin.... All times he referenced to his Greek identity dedicated to fellow false nation which tries to steal common sense. Speaking to Athenians and Thebians: “We are united by the same language, the same blood and the same visions”. The above is a part of the quote: “Holy shadows of the dead, I am not to blame for your cruel and bitter fate, but the accursed rivalry which brought sister nations and brother people to fight one another. I do not feel happy for this victory of mine. On the contrary, I would be glad, brothers, if I had all of you standing here next to me, since we are united by the same language, the same blood and the same visions. Addressing the dead Hellenes (the Athenean and Thebean Greeks) of the Battle of Chaeronea, as quoted in Historiae Alexandri Magni by Quintus Curtius Rufus. Quote No2: In a letter that Alexander sent to the Persian king Darius III of Persia in response to a truce plea he said: your ancestors came to Macedonia and the rest of Hellas [Greece] and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury. I have been appointed leader of the Greeks, and wanting to punish the Persians I have come to Asia, which I took from you” Arrian, Anabasis of Alexander II, 14, 4 (Loeb, P. A. Brunt) - Quote No3: He said in his own language (which just by coincidence was the GREEK Doric dialect: “Ευχαριστώ τοις θεοίς ότι εγεννήθη Έλλην” which means I thank the gods for being Greek” Arrian, Anabasis of Alexander. Based on the book of Ptolemeus I Soter, Alexander’s friend. Quote No4: Now you fear punishment and beg for your lives, so I will let you free, if not for any other reason so that you can see the difference between a Greek king and a barbarian tyrant, so do not expect to suffer any harm from me. A king does not kill messengers.” Historia Alexandri Magni of Pseudo-Kallisthenes, 1.37.9-13 Quote No5: Shall I pass by and leave you lying there because of the expedition you led against Greece, or shall I set you up again because of your magnanimity and your virtues in other respects?” Pausing and addressing to a fallen statue of Xerxes the Great - Plutarch. The age of Alexander: nine Greek lives. Penguin, 1977. p. 294 Quote No6: If it were not my purpose to combine barbarian things with things Hellenic, to traverse and civilize every continent, to search out the uttermost parts of land and sea, to push the bounds of Macedonia to the farthest Ocean, and to disseminate and shower the blessings of the Hellenic justice and peace over every nation, I should not be content to sit quietly in the luxury of idle power, but I should emulate the frugality of Diogenes. But as things are, forgive me Diogenes, that I imitate Herakles, [Hercules] and emulate Perseus, and follow in the footsteps of Dionysos, the divine author and progenitor of my family, and desire that victorious Hellenes should dance again in India and revive the memory of the Bacchic revels among the savage mountain tribes beyond the Kaukasos… As quoted in “On the Fortune of Alexander” by Plutarch, 332 a-b. Quote No7: Our enemies are Medes and Persians, men who for centuries have lived soft and luxurious lives; we of Macedon for generations past have been trained in the hard school of danger and war. Above all, we are free men, and they are slaves. There are Greek troops, to be sure, in Persian service - but how different is their cause from ours! They will be fighting for pay - and not much of at that; we, on the contrary, shall fight for Greece, and our hearts will be in it. As for our foreign troops - Thracians, Paeonians, Illyrians, Agrianes - they are the best and stoutest soldiers in Europe, and they will find as their opponents the slackest and softest of the tribes of Asia. And what, finally, of the two men in supreme command? You have Alexander, they - Darius! Addressing his troops prior to the Battle of Issus, as quoted in Anabasis Alexandri by Arrian Book II, 7. Quote No8: Youths of the Pellaians and of the Macedonians and of the Hellenic Amphictyony and of the Lakedaimonians and of the Corinthians… and of all the Hellenic peoples, join your fellow-soldiers and entrust yourselves to me, so that we can move against the barbarians and liberate ourselves from the Persian bondage, for as Greeks we should not be slaves to barbarians.
