I love this hymn. I always think of Arlington National Cemetery when the part is sung about standing guard though the Angels sleep. The West Point Glee Club sang this for the movie, “We Were Soldiers and Young Once”. It always means something to me that the people singing this may sometimes be leading men and women into combat.

Song played at Ronald Reagan's funeral. I watched the recording of his funeral last week. The part when the band stopped singing and only the music played made me weep for my mom. RIP 🙏 💖

I can never get through this hymn without tearing up. This hymn absolutley sums up the fears, and sorrow of those who experience combat. I think of my father and him being a terrifide 20 year old marine in the 2nd landing wave on Iwo. He was one of the lucky ones to survive. Years later, now married with young children in the 50's his children and wife would be awakened throughout our lives with dad's horrible yelling and crying out in his nightmares. My father was definitely a Broken Man who never fully recovered from Combat. Years later in his upper 80s now in a nursing home we would find out just what some of the horsey witnessed and experienced as nurses would tell us they would overhear him and another WWII Marine veteran talking of their experiences. We never knew...😢 Dad's nightmares finally ended 12-Oct-2010 I now imagine my father being in heaven, a young boy again smiling and no more tears.

WHAT DID OUR FOUNDING FATHERS DO BEFORE THE FIGHT ,,, THEY PLEDGED , EVERYTHING ::: " OUR LIVES , OUR FORTUNES , OUR SACRED HONOR "❗️ IT IS THE SAME TODAY AS IT WAS BEFORE THAT AMERICAN REVOLUTION ,, WE MUST ALL SACRIFICE IN ORDER TO GAIN OUR FREEDOMS ❗️❗️❗️ TRUTH❗️ THERE ARE MANY WHO WILL SHIRK THEIR DUTIES , NOT RISK THEIR LIFE BUT LET OTHERS RISK THEIR LIFE WHILE THEY SIT BACK AND HIDE FROM THEIR RESPONSIBILITY , WILL NOR RISK THEIR FORTUNES BUT BECOME WEALTHY ON OTHER'S SACRIFICES , NOR WILL RISK NOR LOSE THEIR HONOR BUT DISGRACE THEMSELVES TO THEIR FRIENDS , RELATIVES AND STRANGERS AND TO THEIR FUTURE COUNTRY,
