Don't quite buy the Hollywood happy ending here. Lennon barely left his room in the late 70s and was back to cutting people out of his life. He generally looks terrible from 1976 until his death. Yoko had him on a macro diet that left John emaciated. He was also still having sex with May up till the end (per May) and was on drugs, including heroin. Double Fantasy also is not viewed as a return to form, and half the LP are terrible songs by Yoko. In addition, Primal Scream has been lambasted as a therapy program, and for great reasons. Deep nontheistic Buddhism (no self, no free will, emptiness) would have helped Lennon, but Lennon had no patience for mindfulness or real study. He was probably ADHD as well. As an artist Lennon was leader of The Beatles through 1965. But drug use began to interfere with his muse. For a guy with major adverse child expereinces, a biology placing him at risk for addiction, major depression from his biology and ACEs and environment, who could barely get out of bed and never exercised to build his endorphins, chain smoked since his teens, Lennon remained a psycho-social-health wreck his whole life. But back then, people did not know about the ways to psychologically healthy, so the only choices were quack therapies like Janov's and fluffy spiritual stuff in which people could still hang on to their ego. (That was George Harrison's religion.) Like Lennon, Harrison never figured it out. But how could you -- being rich and adored at age 22.

You skipped the American bandstand Pink Floyd syd.. Pink Floyd stayed with Alice cooper. Book saucer full of secrets’ At one point the band went on drive looking at stars homes Beverly Hills. Syd had barely said word since they left London. Driving around Hollywood hills sitting in backseat, suddenly syd says’ You know it’s really great to be in Las Vegas again’’.

Whose hope being the question. The hopes of someone or a bunch of people wanting him to lead them to fame and fortune on the terms of the music industry, then maybe. I can’t imagine a ‘concerned’ (emotionally or professionally) person holding those same hopes.

People are so base, so one dimensional. The Madcap Laughs and Barrett are absolute gems. Each song is a work of art. The fact that anyone could say they are "uncommercial" illustrates the beige slack - jawed nature of human society which has steadily become more so through the years. Recently, this decline in brain power and imagination has accelerated alarmingly. Humans are now most definitely an inferior species with few exceptions. Sad.

Why do jealous people do not look at themselves before criticising other people? Confucius said "When I see a fault in someone else, I look for it in myself". Perhaps, the creator of this ridiculous video envied Elvis intensely because his own fragile, narcissistic ego could not stomach Elvis's amazing talent and good looks. Freud is discredited and outdated!!! Why did he not mention Elvis's incredible generosity and his kindness and himility. There is no compassion in this video, just nastiness and criticism.

This is so stupid. Elvis was a sickly child, among his conditions that meant he needed 24 hour supervision is that he was a sleepwalker. His parents had to keep him in their bed to know if he was up walking into the middle of the road. That continued while his father Vernon went to prison for a minor misdemeanor. Articles like this really defame his memory. Check out the man's music and his talent and take yourself to counselling

Syd Barett was a talented, gifted young man. Unfortunately, he had the wrong friends and hung out with junkies. Nick.M said: We ignored the problem. A sad story for the whole family. When he released his two solo albums, Syd Barett was on the verge of schizophrenia!!! Psychiatry wasn't ready back then... I'm interested in how Syd lived with his illness???? Unfortunately, there are no more books in German...

His insight into what is actually going on in the mind, are extraordinary (RD Laing) . Fascinating. what a shame that Syd refused what was on offer , but it figures I guess. Was it necessary for him to live in isolation for those years although none of us can guess what that was like. I hope he is now content and that understanding came with it . And that he’s happy , content. wherever he may be 🤍

This is a fantastic piece of work, thank you for sharing. What I find so interesting is how he did all of this in public - part knowing what he was doing, part not knowing at the time then figuring it out later as he moved on. When I first started looking more deeply into the man, his career and his music, I kept coming across his quote about not giving it all away (in the sense that although a lot of people came to him and his work looking for answers, he knew he could never answer this aching need for other people directly). What's interesting as I've stayed with David Jones/David Bowie more, is that he did indeed give everything away because he sung, acted, spoke, shared all of his influences, and went through all of these changes for everyone else to see. Perhaps this is the best way he could present himself and others with answers to the question about what it is to be human? Perhaps he was just an incredibly talented person and artist? I don't know but, what I find certainly to be true, is that I have learned so much about myself from his example, and I thank him enormously for that.

I love this video. Great information that makes so much sense. I love the photos, I had not seen some of them. Thanks so much. I am a huge Syd and PF fan, even though I was not born until 1969. 😝 my dear nephew who was diagnosed with ADHD when he was a toddler and who was very very intelligent, had a drug induced psychosis in his early 20’s. Since then he liked being alone, he thrived and did best just being at home with his Mom and Dad living a quiet life. Sounds so much like what Syd did. Unfortunately my nephew passed last year at the age of just 40. 😢 the similarities in descriptions of Syd’s behavior is quite uncanny as I ponder memories of my dear nephew.

The use of drugs is obviously a bad idea and I understand that the band tried to get Syd back as he was before, because of his artistic brilliance and vision. Perhaps he could have been saved ... watching this documentary however, has shown that to ask a psychiatrist or should we call them 'shrinks', is NEVER a good idea. Their "success rate" is still ZERO. For Syd - he'll shine on as the crazy diamond with us saying - we wish you were here.

Of course ye all could use a popsicle. This so called illness isn’t really an illness. This was during a resurance of an era which brought a return of the psychoanalytic dogma from the middle 19 century back from the dead. Been there done says syd. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Later to the day, the medical model became the narrative. Essentially what was going on here was a sort of Darwinian species evolution in process. Humans haven’t always been the same forever and ever. Society just cannot tolerate change and difference which is coming for ya. How that song go. It’s the new Mother Nature taking over. It’s the new Mother Nature gettin over. Yeah that’s one from the good ale days. And she’s gettin ya all.

Interesting take on Syd's illness. Syd's sister Rosemary still claims that he did not have a mental illness. That seems to be wishful thinking given the fact that he completely disappeared into himself and had no relationships with anyone other than her from his late twenties until his death. He certainly seems to have intentionally obliterated his "Syd" persona by gaining a large amount of weight and shaving off all of his body hair...when he entered Abbey Road studios for the last time during the "Shine On" sessions, none of the band even recognized him for quite a while...speaking of that, where did you find the photo of Syd and Roger that appears at 30:28 in the video? I have never seen that photo anywhere before.

Makes sense to me. I find Syd and Jim Gordon to be very similar cases with the exception of the murder of course. Everything else is similar, both great musicians, both a bit odd before the breakdown, both did massive amounts of acid, both completely withdrew from society and music. I am still amazed he was able to write and record Madcap Laughs and Barrett. When Syd was active and healthy he was the greatest songwriter around.
