While more than 56% of applications now use Java 11 in production (up from 48% in 2022 and 11% in 2020), Java 8 is a close second, with nearly 33% of applications using it in production (down from 46% in 2022). (see 2023 State of the Java Ecosystem). I have worked with many large enterprise customers, and the vast legacy code base is Java 8. As a new programmer, you will likely support code without writing code from scratch. Also, while frameworks and new facets of the language have been prevalent, the core of the language is still based on the Java 8 feature set.
