BRAVISSIMA

Thank you so much for the restoration and putting this up there. It's simply a magnificent performance and production. One correction, this is Lyric Opera of Chicago's production which premiered in 1991/92 season, not in 1975. Nonethless, so wonderful to see this again!

The best version of any Chekhov I've seen or heard! I came for the Ashcroft, but I think Dorothy Tutin stole the show. Then there's Patience Collier!-don't get me started. Thank you so much for making this available.

Easily the best ‘Hamlet’ on film… Certainly the most dynamic (and cinematic!). I’ve seen the other ones - they’re too anemic and/or uninspired.

I didn't learn about this story in school, but instead, found out about it through the band A Perfect Circle. On the Mer de Noms album, the 5th track is called "Orestes". I always liked that song, and I wanted to learn all the words to it. I had gone to the library and used the computer so I could get online and look up the lyrics to the song. The results of my search are how I learned about Aeschylus and The Oresteia. That day, I figured I would check the directory and see if my library had a copy available to lend. At that time, it had been checked out, but I reserved it to check out the next time it was there. Every time I would go to the public library, I would search for this book and if it was available, I would check it out. Every year from middle school until I graduated, I would have another read-through. This is the first time I have ever seen the play, and I am absolutely impressed by this performance. The notes that play when the Furies gather together in their anger, is very similar to the tune that plays in the A Perfect Circle song, which is awesome. Also, I love the masks. Even though the character's faces don't change, I find them to be very expressive. I find it amazing, as well, that the rhythm and cadence of the lines are delivered in a way very close to what I had imagined when I would read them in the book.

I always thought Olivier was over rated. Never cared for his Henry the V, thought his Hamlet was a pale production. But! This totally completely blew me away. His performance was brilliant, and natural, and tore my heart out of my chest at the end. I saw this performance a week ago. Never seen King Lear in my life. My friends asked me if I was crazy and I said NO!! I love this, I found a great new appreciation of Olivier I've never had before. Thank you KZbin 😊

I have seen this film so many times, once on the big screen in a museum theatre presentation in the 1980's. At the end of the film, the audience gave a standing ovation.

Verdi’s opera is a towering masterpiece, but the condensed nature of opera plots means that Othello’s doubt has to come more quickly. Watching it creep in gradually in Shakespeare’s original is far more insidious and devastating, even without the power of Verdi’s music.
