What a great area to ride. I've ridden my 1190 ("S", not "R") in the Western Alps of Europe and it's pretty much the same. I've sold it after an accident and wasn't riding much in the laster years (except a Bike Tour from LA to the Mountains around it during a business trip with a Harley Sportster, hehe) I wonder if the 890 would be a good option. The issue with the 1190 I've had wasn't the small front tyre primarly, it was the suspension. It wasn't giving me real confidence to fly over bad stuff. From your video, I can see that the 890R behaves better in terms of that. What's your view on this?

JoeJohnston471: My guess is that the steering head is loose. That seems to be a common cause of the clacking sound. The steering head has ball bearings. Rottweiler sells upgraded roller bearings for the 890, which should stay tight much longer.

Hi Nick, great video! Thank you for sharing with us! I am just not deciding what to buy, kind a between Africa Twin vs. KTM 890 Adventure R, I am little bit scared based on all the reviews and hate towards KTM reliability. What is your feel? How does your bike perform, any issues? Really appreciate honest feedback.
@nickboyer4673

Thomas, I’ll do a 1000 mile review video here shortly. The bike is far superior to the Africa twin, no comparison in my book. It’s a blast to ride! My only issues has been the leaking front tire, and a blown fork seal. Honestly not the end of the world it was an easy fix. It’s a fun bike to ride its very capable. Most people only complain about reliability issues online, not a lot of people get on to mention they have had xxxx trouble free miles.

@@nickboyer4673 The fork seal scares me. Especially that new. I simply cannot remember any of my Japanese motorcycles or atvs having one single manufacturer malfunction, only some minor stuff from user neglect over time. But nice video!!

@@nickboyer4673 Is your KTM still intact? I noticed there's no 1000 mile review on your channel. While your issues so far might not seem serious, they’re still worth noting. On top of that, you often hear about electronics problems and other weaknesses!? For someone who’s just riding locally and heading home the same day, this might not be a big deal. But for travelers who rely on their bike’s reliability, it could become a major issue. In my opinion, the fact that the KTM is the sportier and more fun bike doesn’t really help in such situations. That fun quickly fades when you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere with a "minor issue" that can’t be fixed. What’s your perspective as a rider? Does the fun factor outweigh the risks, or do these potential breakdowns make the bike less appealing for longer trips? I’m currently deciding between a Yamaha Tenere and a KTM 890. However, the recent news about KTM’s insolvency is making the decision a lot easier. Back in my younger years, I rode a 125 EXC - which is probably the only reason I’m still considering a KTM at all.

Friendly suggestion if you’re videoing for an audience is to check your camera angle on your phone. Once you get used to where it needs to point, it won’t be a problem any more. I’d also say that a chin mount is better on a motorbike IMO, chest is good for MTB I think. Cool trails though.

Love my 2022 890 ADVR...but those stock tires are terrible at least in SoCal desert area where I mainly ride...looking at switching them out for Motoz Desert HT's. Also did a lot of comfort and performance upgrades to make bike usable...now it's really capable off-road as that is 95% of what I ride. Next upgrade is suspension...I am blowing through the stroke at speed and it needs to be revalved and resprung for my weight and riding style pretty much like any bike I ride I guess. BTW Arrow exhaust sounds good...I have the Wings exhaust and it is awesome...sounds great and is super small and light. Looks like a great riding area yuo have...we go to Colorado every summer for the high country single-track and love it!

I’d suggest looking up Suspension 101 if you’re in SoCal. Motoz fronts are a bit meh, tend to want to push and don’t have good edge grip (not to mention they cup if you’re running less than factory pressures. RallZ rear is a good compromise if you’re doing road and off road, D606 or GT723 front are pretty good. They still cup at lower pressures but have better edge grip than the motoz fronts IMO.
