The sparks are usually well contained, and it's the norm because before cheap and powerful integrated circuits were available, brushes were the simplest and most affordable way to run a motor. Even today it's the cheapest, but there are more brushless options.

Running a drill machine in open position can damage commutator because stater jumps up and down. It has no screws to tight it.😮

@@Adam-oi7kqVauxhalls are all nightmare cars I'm afraid, A standard obd reader wont clear a airbag light, you may need a diagnostic PDA or laptop for that. Airbags lights can be difficult to clear but good luck.

sparks indicates short circuit, due to high resistance of a carbon brush, the two terminals instead follow the shortest path using (ionized) air as the conductor

Small sparking is normal with any electric motor. Big sparks like this are not.

To the people saying this is a waste of time... I took one apart and cleaned it out in under 10 mins. No alcohol needed, just use an old toothbrush

Mine was making some really unusual smells and i wonder whether it was caused by dust in the motor, burning as it was getting hot, so this is good to know, that you can take them apart and just clean them... I'll have a try 👍 thanks

all you have to do is just clean the brushes and the mating surface so that they can contact each other properly. make sure that the brushes can slide up and down freely and that the spring or whatever pushes down on the brushes are doing so properly.

Truth I fix many corded drills if you just rub the commentator with a little white grit sandpaper just to clean discoloration preventing proper contact make sure the carbon brushes a long enough make make sure the gears are lubricated up and freely working and that's pretty much it and also make sure the cord is not frayed I have a Milwaukee USA 0228-1 I fixed works 100 perfect I also own a DeWalt DW 255g I rebuilt as a KZbin Creator I do this if I just want views and don't care but that's how you fix it
