Found and ordered recently for $200, I'll mainly use it with my Nikon film cameras but also wonder how it'll perform on my x-t3 in 40mm eqv., granted that my top two favourite focal lengths is 28mm and 40mm

I own a bunch of nikkor 28mm lenses, non AI, AI and AIs f3.5/2.8/2 the ones i use the most are the nikkor PC28mm ( one of the more affordable PC lenses) and a sigma 28 f1.8 when reporting on people events to get real close up portraits (focusses down to 0.3M) while keeping the background out of focus. I could use the nikkor 28 f2 for this but the sigma is AF and locks in on focus faster than i can do manually. There's never been much love for these 28 nikkors, hence the fact they can be found quite cheap, but these days things seem to be changing.

I love this lens. I bought mine new in about 1982 to use on a Nikon FM. When I bought my first DSLR one of the buying criteria was that it had to be compatible with my 28mm f2.8 AiS. I still use it regularly on my D750. There may be newer alternatives but they’re all so much bulkier and heavier than this beautiful small lens. Useful 52mm filter mount - so not expensive in filters.

I used several Domke bags over my 25+ years as a photojournalist and loved every one of them. I still have my very first bag but retired it once I wore several holes in the corners, never had a zipper go bad and or a strap break, great bags. I always had two bodies and at least 4-5 lenses and a flash, batteries and charger, film, notepad, pens, cleaning kits, blowers, cable release and anything else I might need.

Decades ago, I replaced my 28mm f/3.5 Nikkor pre-AI lens with the 28mm f/2.8 Nikkor AIS lens. I used my 28mm f/3.5 in reverse position on bellows for macro photography. I used my 28mm f/2.8 for street, landscapes, building interiors, and vehicle interiors. In 2015, I purchased the faster Zeiss 28mm f/2 Distagon ZF2 to replace my 28mm f/2.8 Nikkor. I was surprised that at the same f-stops, there was little difference in image quality between the two lenses.

brilliant. My gramps handed me down his old gear F4E kit, packed so similar like that individual cloth wraps. My primary is now D3S, 85/1.4D, 20-35/2.8D, 80-200.2.8D, 60/2.8D Micro. SB-800. 2x SB-R200. Had the 28-70/2.8D regular mounted but takes up space, so a classic 35-70/2.8D does fine. Or I like it if I'm not carrying the 80-200. But I'll use the 180/2.8D

I own this lens; and the closeness you can get with it; is why I use this along with the 55mm F2.8Micro as my two ebay product shots. I own the Nikon 28mm F1.8G; I have tested both; and the f1.8G is superior photographically in every way except for macroness. But this lens is still amazing and like any of the old F AIS lenses; it's so versatile so I probably will never sell it.

@janmalmstrom7843

The d3200 still has the 'old' Nikon mount as far as I know. So it should work fine.
@caycejones1258
@caycejones1258 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It will mount, because both camera and lens utilize Nikon's F mount, but with this lens, the P, S, and A modes won't work. You'll be in Manual mode only. Also, since the lens has no electronic contacts and the camera has no mechanical aperture ring feeler, the Matrix meter won't work, so you'll lose the camera's exposure guidance, because the camera and lens have no way of communicating with each other. You'll have to have a separate light meter to tell you where to set the lens's aperture ring and camera's shutter speed and ISO settings to get correct exposure. External light meters ARE very accurate, but you'll be going back to how photographers worked about 50+ years ago. Lastly, your photos probably won't have any EXIF data.

@@janmalmstrom7843 I'm actually confused about focal length conversion on old school Nikon lenses for crop sensor. Will it behave as 24 mm or as 36mm, on crop body
@caycejones1258
@caycejones1258 2 жыл бұрын
This lens would work well with your D7200 and its features. It would be equivalent to a focal length of 42mm. The diagonal length of the D7200 sensor is 28.21mm, which would make the 28mm focal length what would be considered a "normal" lens on Nikon DX (APS-C) cameras as opposed to "wide" or "telephoto". On Nikon FX (full frame) cameras, 28mm is considered to be the beginning of the "wide" angle range.

The Nikon 28mm f/2.8 'E' series lens isn't too bad either..only caveat is that it doesn't have the meter coupling 'rabbit ears' to allow it to couple with meters on the older Nikon camera bodies. Doesn't have quite the build quality of the regular Nikkor lens but images taken with it are fine.

"Even before the introduction of digital cameras, some great lenses were produced"? The fact is that MOST of the greatest lenses in the history of photography were produced way before the dawn of digital in the early 2000's. BTW, do you use perspective control Nikkors, given that you are an interior photographer?

Fantastic interior shots. What a beautiful, natural light. One day I'll get this lens. I've been keeping an eye on it on the used market, but for now asking prices are still a bit unreasonable. Really nice video, I enjoyed it very much! Thank you Jan for sharing your thoughts on this lens. I have the Nikon Z5 and have been looking for the right wide angle lens that would give me the vintage feel you speak about on my mirrorless Nikon. I seriously considered this lens but ultimately went with the Contax Carl Zeiss 28mm F2.8 Distagon, adapted for the Nikon Z. I used to own the Distagon and a whole range of zeiss lenses when I used a film based Contax system in the 80's and 90's. My understanding is that the Nikon 28, F2.8 AIS is even better for sharpness wide open and has less distortion. The macro contrast and biting sharpness when stopped down is unbeatable though on the Zeiss.
@janmalmstrom7843
@janmalmstrom7843 2 жыл бұрын
I personally do not have so much experience of the Contax lenses, but I know that they always had high quality. And if it fits with your Z-system, that's even better. Thanks for your comment.
