I've watched this many times now, but only now am I in *awe* in Gay Byrne as an interviewer, and specifically I was in awe for what he said at 8:24. "But you know Gilmartin." On paper, in text, it looks like a challenge to Flynn, which it _clearly_ is. But it's the way he said it, almost offhandedly, and instantaneously after Flynn made his point about not taking money from anyone that Flynn has almost no time to think about it and let his guard down. It's said so matter-of-factly that, along with the candor that he built with Flynn over the interview, Flynn couldn't resist to comment about Gilmartin not ten seconds after saying that he wouldn't say anything more. I've talked to quite a few politicians about some issues that I had to challenge them on, which is why I am in such _awe_ at Gay Byrne's manner, composure and scene-setting to let politicians like Flynn speak *too* candidly on situations that would normally be a challenge to them. Any interviewer, journalist, hell any _person_ that wants to hold politicians accountable need to take notes from this interview of Byrne's.

I have a sure-fire way of becoming a successful Irish politician… Step 1. Come up with an unpronounceable Cabinet position (like Tornichte), but make absolutely sure whatever name you come up with, it must never be spelled the way it sounds (like Taoiseach). Step 2. Make sure that you constantly tell other countries what they have to do, how they have to do it, and when they have to do what you say…while at the same time ignoring the behaviour of Irish soldiers interfering in other countries! Step 3. Announce that you are in favour of a single United Ireland, while at the same time pronouncing and instructing other countries to accept a divided two -State solution….but be absolutely oblivious to the total hypocrisy in what you’re saying!!!

So, with the context of the call log at the end, would you consider Lenihan's statement in the interview to be a lie? It seems to me like a middle ground between "I didn't call him at all" and "I spoke to him directly." He called the office, his message was relayed and he knew that, but he wasn't able to get a direct yea or nay from the President in real time. Either way, I appreciate your videos. As I study for a history degree, I appreciate more and more that I shouldn't uncritically accept everything I see in a half hour long youtube video... But you make it very easy! I think you show a lot of passion, you do your best to keep things accessible, and you've improved with each of your last three videos, including finding a visual style from your last video that I can see you running with.

Hit the nail on the head saying Irish is a dead language. 13 years I learned it in primary and secondary school only to realise when you leave school and in my case become an engineer in later life that it was a complete fucking waste of time. Why are we still prioritising a language in schools when the vast majority of us will never use it again when we leave. Not to mention how bad it’s taught in the classrooms and feeling like it’s being shoved down your throat rather than being enjoyable to learn. I think deep down as well most teachers will admit this as well but are too scared to admit the truth and face reality. Not saying Irish shouldn’t be thought in schools as we all should have the right to learn whatever but to me Irish is over prioritised and over taught compared to other subjects, particularly if we’re going into professions later in life where Irish is no benefit to us which let’s be honest is the vast majority of Irish people.

Great watch! I was a student in UCD during most of these events, and it's hard to overstate how furiously indignant the FF faithful were that Robinson would directly challenge Lenihan, never mind the anger directed at Duffy. I would have been (and am) a Labour voter and a Robinson supporter, but having met all 3 candidates in the course of the campaign, it was obvious that Lenihan was head and shoulders above the others in terms of charm and sheer charisma, and a sense of both experience and confidence, despite his health. While Robinson's presidency was a defining moment in the modernisation of Ireland, and undoubtedly the right choice, it still feels sad that such a vital, likeable figure as Lenihan came to such an ignominious end. It would be nice to think that the personal loss he suffered at least had the upside of ending the mystique of cute-hoorism, but a quick survey of the fresh faces in the background of many of these clips, some unencumbered with bank accounts, show we were only getting started.

We will never see an era like this again , whereby politicians have balls , very big balls taking chances go big or go home the likes never to be seen again
