"fuck it, I'm going to do both. I'm going to drink and save the band. " that is one of the most common reasons I see for people to relapse, it's certainly why I did. The fact that you can both drink and do something very important makes it seem like drinking isn't a bad thing

4:15 "If you don't tell me what I need to hear, you'll never get clean, you'll always live in fear." This is one of the reasons that I love the program that I worked with, you didn't have to tell us anything helpful, we were asking you questions for your own good. If you didn't want to participate and behave, you were allowed to sit on the side and watch. All we ask is that you do not consume the substance that you have an addiction. You have to do the rest yourself, it's important to participate in group and talk to the counselor but at the end of the day, if you want to play the silent film star, all I care about is that you play the silent film star while sober.

3:01 This is why I didn't press charges after I was assaulted at my work. I detoxed by myself in a basement but my job is to get people through detox so they can get to rehab without detoxing there and getting in trouble for losing your cool one time. It wasn't fun to get punched in the head, they broke my glasses. But at the end of the day, rehab fucking sucks and a lot of the time we are making you be there against your will. because we know that what you want right now is not what you wanted when you admitted yourself and it's not what you wanted want after getting out.

I started drinking when I was 18, I got my first job and they made me the night manager of a fast food restaurant with no training. I would often be alone for the last 5 hours of a 12-hour shift, there was no support and when I was done there was nothing open but the liquor store across the street. I'd bring a bucket of leftover chicken and trade it for a six pack of Smirnoff ice, house them, And then walk home. When I discovered that everclear tastes good and is not remotely as bad as people said it is it was all over. I was putting back a bottle of ever clear every week, I was getting more than half of my calories a day from alcohol. When I got sober I lost nearly 90 lb. And I fucking hate being sober. I hadn't gotten to the point where I was feeling the negative effect. People didn't know that I was an alcoholic, I held my clear like a champ and so when I casually drank and social scenarios it looked like I was just immune to alcohol. quitting wasn't a choice, I necrotized my appendix from repeated vomiting and diarrhea and it sunk through my torso and came to rest on my spine. I only quit because I had one bad event. I didn't quit because it was impacting my social life or because I was unhealthy, I used to do weightlifting and marathon swimming. I quit because I couldn't risk losing another organ. It sucked going through withdrawal by myself and I fucking hate walking the steps. I was told that I'm not a sober person, it takes more than not drinking to be sober. I literally haven't had a drink in 2 years, 2 months, 16 days, and 6 hours but that doesn't count as sobriety because I haven't admitted that I am powerless and given myself up to God, I refuse to make amends with some of the people that I hurt because they enabled my alcoholism and gave me booze while I was rehabbing and I don't want to reopen that connection. The sobriety community can feel hostile and terrible if you are grumpy about being sober, if you are seen as too young to be an alcoholic, and so many of the programs are really cruel to people who just need help. I work in rehab now and I admit that I take some amount of pleasure in watching people go through the same detox pain as I did. I relate to pickles the drummer, I didn't want to get sober. I was happy drinking, I quit because I was compelled to. I relate to the snakes and barrels member who opened a rehab clinic to force the world into sobriety. This show is so much better at portraying alcoholism than Rick and Morty. maybe other people can relate to Rick, I only started falling asleep places I didn't intend to when my organs were failing and I couldn't keep up. out of those last two weeks I wasn't blacking out. I wasn't running around slurring and burping and choking, I just seemed a little spacey and had a fondness for bringing bottled water from home instead of drinking from fountains. And who knows, I'm stoned as all hell so who can say that I'm sober lol

I've been a daily drinker for the entire 13 years of my adult life. Like Pickles, I started drinking to cope with family trauma. I drank because the drink made me feel good, next thing I knew I couldn't feel good without the drink. Fast forward, then I just felt bad even when I was drinking but I had to drink like it was a daily obligation. Come 2020 people started noticing and commenting on my drinking. Early this year I got septic shock (got food poisoning while I was sick with pneumonia, can you believe that? haha) and almost kacked it for good. The doctor told me they could tell I was heavy drinker from my lab work and that my organs can't handle that kind of drinking and that if I continue drinking then it's highly unlikely I would fully recover. Then I thought of my dad who'd been hospitalized twice for alcohol abuse, once for poisoning when I was a kid, and a second time when I was an adult for full blown organ failure. I knew that could easily be me, so I accepted that I have a problem with alcohol and that I need help to quit drinking and stay sober. I called up a good friend and asked to be driven to an AA meeting the day after I was discharged from the hospital. I stuck with it, allowed myself to be coached, and now I've got 72 days - more than 2 solid months - of no booze! That's by far the longest period of time I've ever gone without a drink since I started at 17! It's not easy. I'm having ups and downs, I'm remember things I'd forgotten, changing old ideas about the world, and learning to reconnect with my inner self, all without my magic potion, and all while recovering from a deadly illness. But even when my head is on fire from an acute reaction to sobriety I have hope because of the genuine compassion and comradery of my loved ones who want to see me heal and from the complete strangers who welcomed me into the program of AA. There's even other metalheads in there! We recently listened to Thulcandra after a meeting.

+Lover Deadly I love the bit about how there were other metalheads there. When most people think of "AA", they think of stuffy, pretentious, overly positive, Biblethumping Catholic Private School looking fellows. I'm so glad that you both found your people, while finding help.
