Myth not busted. There are plenty of videos showing a large difference. Also, one reason you crank with open throttle on a carbureted engine is that fuel isn't being drawn into the engine vs. closed throttle is pulling fuel on the idle circuit. I've seen the muffler on a car full of a good fuel-air mixture compression testing, and then start the engine, blowing the muffler open...

I have a 1990 115hp 4cylinder. My engine only cold starts with starting fluid. And then it runs perfect and turns on normally. I’m thinking that this could be my problem. When I push the key in it makes a clicking noise but i don’t believe it is working. I just rebuilt all 4 carbs and it has had this problem before I rebuilt the carbs and now. Do you think it could be the primer enrichment. Should the plunge(black thing on top of the solenoid)on the enrichment system get pushed down when i push the key in?
@TheMarineDoctor
@TheMarineDoctor 5 күн бұрын
@@Adrien-gm4dr Disconnect the hose that is not connected to the carb for the solenoid. Activate the primer and squeeze the bulb. Fuel should flow. If it does not, swap the hoses and try again. If it still does not flow...check the feed nipple for debris. Last resort...change the primer solenoid.

@@timothyschulz4730 Remove the pump and squeeze the primer. If fuel come out the back of the pump its a fail. Compression and spark need to be tested. You could also trim the engine up at idle and see if the engine cleans up. The would mean a flooding carb.

Hi! Swedish viewer here :) I made a carburetor upgrade on my 15 hp to get 20 hp and it runs nice until I have driven 5 -10 minutes. Then it starts taking in to much air and when I pump fuel from the tank it overflows and (ofcourse) gets impossible to start. The thing is that it runs good again when I swap back to the original 15 hp carb. Somewhere it is leaking. Do you know what the problem could be?

Seems like cooling system water is getting into the block or the combustion chambers. When you shut it off it has enough time to heat into steam which leaks out the carbs. This would cause some loss of power at high RPM, but also do damage long term to everything, including rusting the spark plugs out.

If i have a 24 gallon fuel tank and fuel injected outboard; is it better at end of season to fill up the tank all the way with fresh fuel with stabilizer or run the fuel tank as low as possible before putting it away for storage and put stabilizer for the remaining fuel? thanks!
@TheMarineDoctor
@TheMarineDoctor 3 ай бұрын
This is a debate that has been going on for a long long time. Either will work, but the preferred method in the service manuals is this (Mercury). Drain as much fuel from the tank as possible and treat what is left. (Note...they are saying DRAIN not operate the engine and get it as low as possible) This means disconnecting the engine from the fuel supply and removing the fuel from the tank. Obviously not really for the DIY person. As the fuel system on EFI engines is sealed, there is no need to treat the fuel already in the engine. But as a personal recommendation. It would not hurt to add and ounce of two stroke oil to a full tank of gas to help keep the pumps lubed for the following year....especially if water gets into the system.
