As an old Bunnymen fan since the Heaven Up Here era, I confess that I was initially a bit put off by all the ‘Echo 2.0’ stuff (except for Evergreen, which I thought was a fairly decent returning statement). I listened to each new release as it arrived, but with an admitted bias and an inherent, unshakable longing for the Echo of old. Long story short, at a certain point I finally learned to let go of the past and approach all the post-Y2K albums with a fresh set of ears, and much to my surprise I found myself enjoying _some_ of the latter-day Bunnymen offerings a lot more than I had previously. Especially the “Flowers” and “Siberia” albums. The ratio of songs I like to those that I either don’t like or feel indifferent about was tipped a bit more to the latter with “The Fountain” (and then again with “Meteorites”), but this is a truly good song, and once I stop playing the futile game of comparing everything new (or new-ish) to the first four albums, I hear a whole new dimension to it. To sum it all up… I definitely like this song more than anything from the ‘87 ‘grey album’, and that’s good enough.
