I've wondered how these kinds of scenes were shot. Good stuff.

Some 35 years later, a similar artificial sett was built for the other Badger film featured on this channel: New Forest Badgers (2015) Narrated by Allan Corduner. The badgers were free to come and go as they pleased as it was on a property on the open forest.

@@newforestarchive Well, t'was you called then „large wasps“, but what is their specific name? Hornets? Yeah, I guessed as much but hornets can still be many things. It’s not that I haven’t tried to find out and I do think it could be the European hornet (Vespa crabro) but is it?
@newforestarchive Жыл бұрын
@@Hallands. Quite right these are Vespa crabro, filmed in the New Forest. They are larger than the Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina), which are now in the UK. The Asian Hornet is more of a threat to our bee population. With two nests found in Southern England in 2021.

So what IS the rare fungus that only grows on the dung of horses grazing natural pasture?? It would have been good to know! Some of us are interested in such things. Yes, I know this film is 30 years old, but it falls short of the standards of the time, when I was also a scriptwriter.
@newforestarchive Жыл бұрын
Not knowing the actual name of the fungus that grows on horse dung is perhaps not as important as the knowledge now gained that such a fungus exists. It is the script's gift that keeps on giving.... 🍄Nail Fungus (Poronia punctata) kzbin.info/www/bejne/baCzaWeQm82ie7s

It’s a shame the scriptwriter didn’t know a bit more about forestry, or have a s riot editor to corral things like confusion between pollarding and coppicing. Not a bad programme, but lightweight when it came to giving the historical truth about how a privileged elite took everything and limited the commoners to the bare minimum on land that had once been theirs to share. Andnothing has changed. Britain is still infected with the cancer of feudalism that holds a tiny minority can own all the land and its resources ( think of Crown rights over any mineral wealth you might discover on your property). This suppression of or people’s rights will never end until the populace stops tugging its forelock to the rich and powerful and gets on with serious land and wealth reforms.

Not sure quite why the introductory music would be Irish (at least it sounds Irish to me) considering this documentary is about The New Forest in Southern England ! We have an ancient forest atop Shooter's Hill, in S.E.London, which the local people have had to battle to have protected status against its destruction by construction companies. Once such a forest is destroyed, it cannot be so easily replaced, nor should it be.

We know that Chris is 'Marmite' (love or hate) to many people. He is however, in a position to raise public awareness of a perceived problem. The important thing is to encourage dialogue between all the interested parties. Commoners, Verderers and the various national bodies. Get the balance right to encourage, tourism, wildlife and farming. If there are to be farming subsidies across the UK, make sure they are fair to all. If we avoid personal comments, a constructive narrative begins.... There is much to be gleaned from visiting the various websites including: newforestcommoner.co.uk verderers.org.uk newforestassociation.org newforestassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/NF_Grass_Final_Report.pdf hlsnewforest.org.uk/projects/verderers-grazing-scheme/
