I had the good fortune to see Chase in the summer of 1974, shortly before Bill's tragic death. A HS senior and trumpet player myself, I grabbed some buddies and drove to Kalamazoo to see Chase at Don Neal's Mr. T-Bone. We arrived early and picked a table literally six feet from Bill as he played. Bill's trumpet raised high in the air, he started off with "Open Up Wide". What a pure sound! Chase played music from three albums (Chase, Ennea, Pure Music), plus other selections including a four-trumpet rendition of McCarthur Park, which blew our socks off! The best part? During the break Bill talked with us about his playing style, and gave advice on mouthpiece selection. It was a night to remember!

Your chops and astonishing range are just as good as, if not better than, that of Jon Faddis

Thank you for sharing your practice methods. It's fantastic to get info like this from a consummate pro. It's so easy to reinforce bad habits when you don't start with a good warm up and end with a warm down. I am a comeback player and Stamp exercises work really well for me, especially connecting middle and high registers and producing a more open tone up high. I've been working with PDFS and it's definitely time to get the Stamp book. The Caruso too. I love warming down with Caruso. No matter what may go wrong during the day the warm down helps the chops to relax and get set for the next day.

He's still got the juice! I'm not a trumpet player, but I have some knowledge of the instrument. I must say it's good to see there is at least one person on KZbin playing high notes properly with a good, full centered tone. I have seen so many "experts" doing tutorials on how to play in the upper register, but all they know how to do is pinch out puny notes with no full sound. Mark is the real deal and not a poser, unlike the rest of them I have seen.

It's so wonderful to see you Sir. I've heard many people try that C but it's nothing as clear as you just played it. Please keep up the great job and continue to share anything you do. Again, it's great to see and hear you even in a short clip. 👍🏻🎺

Mark, you're absolutely incredible. I took up trumpet as a 4th grader in 1984 when my older brother played Maynard Ferguson's Rocky. When we got to high school, our band director played Future Corps for us. Freshman year we got to see you live in Epcot, and it blew my mind. Thank you for continuing to blow my mind and that 🎺 for decades! I listen to the Adam Carolla podcast every day, and I wonder how many listeners know when he says Get it On where this comes from. I know. You know. And this tribute is legendary. Thank you, from the bottom of my embouchere.

The circular lip muscle he was working with the large, flat end, is the Orbicularis Oris. The cheek muscles worked on the small end are the left and right Buccinators. There are other muscles used but those 2 are the main ones.

Hi Mark. I'm just new to your site's. Your warm up looks challenging, also I have limited time to spend practicing. Could this warm up, or parts of it suffice as a stand alone "mini practice session"?

Good afternoon I practice high notes. I'm learning, but I feel like my mouthpiece is big. Best Brass 3c... about 5 years ago I played the Shilka 15a4 and I liked it.. but the sound on it is not so beautiful.. and I sacrificed the range for the sound. Now I want to restore my range, and I wanted to ask you for the maestro, the top notes of Schilke 15a4 or take a large mouthpiece. I'm asking you because I have exactly the same setup as you. And I take the upper notes exactly according to the same principle of exhalation and hold the ambu-chur in the same way. Please tell me how can I contact you? I will be very grateful to you, forgive me for my English.

Mark, I know it's not a big deal, but you're one of the trumpet players that inspired me as a 14 year old when my brother gave me a Future Corps recording of "one more time, Chuck Corea". I didn't know at the time that the trumpet could play such things, and it was a huge inspiration. After that, my high school band played in Chicago at the Midwest Clinic, where you played with the St. Johns River City band. I was pulled aside by one of my band directors to watch a rehearsal of the band, and it further blew my mind on what was possible on the trumpet. I think it was a double B flat at the end of "Limehouse Blues". Anyways, thanks for everything

WOWZERS !!! You could call a dawg with that high pitched note! I didn't think it possible, to play a note on a trumpet, THAT High pitched !!! You could shatter glass with that one, & you have great range & precision & all your notes are lined up centered and are rounded and are spot on ! That's a goal to aim for ! I can still hear that high note, bouncing around between my ears, in all that muddy water.
