I've had to take a 5 year break from drumming for medical reasons after 35 years. Re acclimating has been frustrating as I've tried to go to fast. I'm now taking your lessons online to keep me focused rather than trying to be what I was too fast! Thank you!

Main takeaway from this video: Sounds really boring, and THATS a good way of not sounding really interesting ! 🤣🤣 Love your approach and the way you take the same concept (change dynamic and phrasing) to ANY rudiment. Really makes me see how far you can go with simple patterns.

I like the way you explain things. I'm definitely going to use the dropping sticks from the same and different heights to explain flams - maybe throw in a reference to Galileo dropping those stones off of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, because I'm actually teaching a high school band drumline here in Canada. Many thanks!

this is the best video on ghost notes. usually they'll say ghost notes are difficult to teach as it relies heavily on the drummer's sensibility and feel. But you just explained this where anyone can lock in

I studied privately with Alan Dawson for 1.5 years. His rules: beater is never buried. Good to know how to play heel up and heel down, always with toes relaxed and flat. Sit on the back of the throne to gain more leg support which reduces back strain. Develop good abdomen muscles so that the end result is your feet act like your hands. I also took 2 lessons with Tony Williams, who did not correct my style.
@DaveMajorАй бұрын
Those lessons with AD must have been amazing. The Dawson book really opened up my playing. For jazz and open kick drums yeah, never bury the beater. But there are other styles and other sounds that need the kick buried. It's never an either or IMO. Always having maximum control and technical ability to pick and choose when the music needs that sound and technique

I take classes on an acoustic drum and study on an electric drum. Then I need to play very low volume and I can't. Any advice for studying how to lower the volume on the snare drum, for those who have an electric drum?
@DaveMajorАй бұрын
Its all about heights. Make usre you control the height of your stick onj either kit. Ghosts are about 2-3 fingers off the head and accents are bigger and more powerful. Secondly, turn the volume of your electric kit up and then play quieter. Having it quiet in your headphones or speaker only tricks you into thinking the kit is quiet.

Actually, the paradiddle is an "interrupted" single stroke roll rather than a so-called " paradiddle. Somewhere along the rudimental way, drummers discovered the double stroke and applied it to the singles in many different applications. Then they decided to name the groups of notes as single double and triple paradiddles when they actually function to flip the hand sequence from Right lead over to the Left hand lead and then back again to the Right hand lead and so on. Any single group of doubles will flip the hand sequence over. Odd numbers of doubles will keep the lead hands flipping over while even numbers of doubles will keep the hands leading on the same hand. You can manipulate the order of your stickings simply by knowing this concept of flip flopping the lead hands via the use or interruption of the double stroke. Just another way of seeing and perceiving how drumming can and does really work as seen from another point of view.

What’s the tempo on the slow, medium and fast ones?
@DaveMajorАй бұрын
@@mysteryperson6168 no idea. My speed and your speed could be wildly different and so just choose a tempo that feels a little challenging while also being manageable. I do exercises like this for a max of 5 mins and then move on. Within those 5, increase the tempo if you feel you can and make sure to track your tempos and the ones you achieved in a practice diary 👊
@mysteryperson6168Ай бұрын
@@DaveMajor I know yeah, I’m just struggling to do this with a metronome, I can’t count the beat correctly
@DaveMajorАй бұрын
Couple of options could be to program a click or snare pattern in groove scribe.com Or set your metronome to have no accent and just play a single sound. I use the app tempo and it's great but most will do it.

Nice. I've been putting effort into flow as a major focus point recently and this was a good watch. Especially the 3rd point, I have indeed been slowing down my rudiment practice and spreading it over the kit, including my feet. Cheers again 👍

Doing a rythmicial expresion spontaniously is more difficult with single strock especially when speeded up.Doing a double stroke the same. with verying rhythm takes some awareness,but play a paredidle with accents where you want ,mix it wifh your feet and play on diffdrent drums,like cross overs.Im known to be lazy so i will fiddle with paradidle.if attack is wanted,that takes clear and distinct....other accent approaches and awareness of what you can machani ially do on the things i front of you ,its still not far from kung-fu.
