I've never seen anything from Buddy Rich where he wasn't awe-inspiring. There are drummers who come close (perhaps Dave Weckl and a couple of others), but no-one I am aware of can surpass Rich. If you claimed Rich was the best ever, I wouldn't be able to argue the point. What is interesting is how much the band seems to me to veer into "jazz-fusion" territory and as usual, Rich excels, as does the band. I imagine his reputation as a punishing and difficult task master didn't deter high calibre players from wanting to play with "the best".

Does anybody know who the tenor saxophonist is? Incredible solo.
Prolly my fave Buddy solo; the sound of that snare and bass drum not to mention the toms just crisp and clean. Snare + BD combo's lol are at ah another level, just freaking w o w!! Beyond belief. No need for double bass jive, that's how you play kids! Peace

When I was young, his technique captivated me for decades. Now, even though the technique is still unbelievable, I can see his true genius. He created "an experience" EVERY TIME the man touched the drums. For example, when he comes out of the first drum solo of West Side in this concert: 34:40. Go back and experience that. He feels it, the crowd feels it, the band feels it, we feel it 50 years later! It was one moment among thousands Buddy created and we are all so lucky to have had them captured!

F*cking hell! This is by far the best concert I've seen on KZbin from Buddy Rich, both musically and in terms of drum sound. The arrangements never go too far and lose the melody. And BR is mature and restrained (for him) in his playing. Like Dave Weckl, BR gets better and better as he ages. This is just pure magic.

Buddy's drums have a deeper tone here, I think he is using Ludwig, here rather than the Slingerlands which I believe sounded higher in tone, not a hit to Slingerland (I love my Slingies) but just a difference in tone. Also, that that large china seems to add a great extra punch.

The first song was outstanding! Maybe the best song played by the BR Band I've ever heard. Great feel and groove. Buddy played so tastefully without overplaying it was scary. :)

I grew up with the Beatles and all that, and I love great pop/rock music and progressive rock (Yes, Tull, etc), but WOW, do I love 40's jazz and swing!

Buddy Rich was lucky to have his pick of young, fresh out of music school kids to hire for this touring band. He probably didn't have to pay them too much, they jumped at the chance to play for love of the music, and there was still a decade left before the music industry totally collapsed into rap, grunge, and auto tune.

I remember the later 1970s, Battle of the Bands -- Rich vs Ferguson, London, Ontario, Canada. Rich played first and Ferguson group came onstage a grunting and blew the lids off of the challenge to follow. Rich seemed to have a dated band of mid-aged veterans whilst Ferguson tailored the young 'up and coming.' Since this period, I believe the Rich band line-up and sound changed, obviously to me under influence. Now . . . altissimo screaming brass and flying saxers to boot ANY bands arse one over. So . . . prepare for haters to sound me off over this comment!
