The original Port Kembla station (1920) pre-dated the Australian Iron and Steel integrated steelworks. The Hoskins family moved their operation from Lithgow knowing better port facilities could be set up here. The first steel production was in 1927-8. The former No.1 Works is in your shot from Cringila overbridge to the right while looking towards Port North. The station used to be one of the busiest on that line servicing plants such as the Commonwealth Rolling Mills (CRM). Metal Manufactures and the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting (ERS) which was where the southern hemisphere's tallest emissions stack was once located. I often see comments relating to Lysaghts station...what today's people need to understand is that it is an industrial station with surrounding private property that is secured for safety reasons.

The bridge over the Shoalhaven is most definitely not timber truss but steel/wrought iron truss bridge. It did have a timber deck until the early 1980s. Now that the historic bridge is no longer used it could be used to carry a single track, at least into Nowra.

I'd say the reason for the fenced "step" at the city end of the platforms is because Marayong used to only be a single platform (as was the entire track). On the shops side, they had to build the retaining wall in order to create space for Platform 2 and its track. Before that, there was no overhead steps/crossing, just a ramp up what was then a slight hill to reach the platform, roughly where the stairs are now by the road crossing. The bridge carrying the tracks on the Richmond end are separate and are of obviously different vintage. Under those bridges there's actually a small footpath to walk around to get to the other side, this was probably "the way around" before the overhead part was built.

Check the pronunciation of Tallong and Wingello. It is a bit of a shibboleth when the Premier and other blowins mispronounces these places.

I noticed at 14.46 a short glimpse of the former stationmasters residence at Berry with my mother, a daughter of the stationmaster, living there from 1917 until 1923. Some years ago I learned that when my grandmother went into labour with Mums youngest sister my grandfather, once the milk train had cleared had cleared the line from Bomaderry, then used a hand driven fettlers trike to transport grandma to a cottage hospital located near the Bomaderry station. I understand that he handed the electric staff in just in time to clear the line for the following midday passenger train!

Back in the 1960's and early '70's before the original station buildings were demolished and when it was permanently staffed Hexham station was amazing with the most incredible topairy ; ships, animals , even the Australian coat of arms, There was a, for its time, large coal loading facility for ships coming up the Hunter River to take Cessnock coal down to the White Bay power station in Sydney. Another interesting feature of Hexham station was a pronounced tilt to the right of the track as it entered and left the station on the way to Newcastle.

The sun angle seems to be very strange. The sun seems to be in frame a lot (eg. 2:01:30), but it looks like an early morning trip starting at sunrise, but isn't the train heading predominantly in a south-westerly direction???

Many a time I took the train from Ingleburn to the city. I use to like the wooden information blocks and the clock, and the station guy used to come out and twirl them. The East HIlls extension around 1988 made him a bit busier.
