Scribe and The Bear absolutely my new favourites - James’s work is so refreshing to view. A new favourite Artist for me and hope to see his work in person ❤

Feel like I'm the only one in the comments that didn't like this. The style seems too familiar right now and the color palette seems just trendy. Don't get me wrong, they're stunning, but it feels like it's (especially the characters) lacking soul/realness. Contempory art has served it's purpose and now feels stale. This is like new disney compared to old disney. The new disney movies are good, great even at times, but they don't hold a candle to the old classics with real villians and hand drawn love and charm. Just my thoughts.. I did like the last sculpture though.

If you know James Jean, you know he hates explaining his paintings. “I like to let the work speak for itself.” He said once. So you know this was really hard for him to go on a rant about his work 😂😂 😂

now that i know you have a comics background it makes sense, i was going to say i can see there is definitely nothing pertaining to the world of academic " fine art ", the art history cannon of art. These works do indeed seem like blown up versions of little comics, i can't help try to encourage immersion into the world of fine arts education, and not be afraid of it. I grew up loving comics and drawing as a North American kid and really was completely clueless about fine art, till post secondary education, there, where i learned of the big ol' world of "art " and the world of painting proper, for lack of a better description, that exists. I think a lot of people with a more graphic art background reject the "art" world, but if you actually are immersed in the cannon of art, it eventually succeeds in opening your eyes and soul, that is if it doesn't totally offend you or disinterest you outright, but on that note, i think it might be a good conclusion of thoughts to say that fine arts at it's best can tend toward the " spiritual" in art, to borrow Kandinsky's term, whereas i think the graphic arts tradition possibly leans more towards fashion or industry : )

Not being able to connect with certain aspects of one's culture definitely resonates with me. You can see the beautiful dedication and mastery in James' work. I've followed his art for the past 20 years and it's amazing to see how his painting style has evolved over the years.

It's perfectly fine to refer to him as James Genius. I interviewed JJ way back in 2003 and he was kind enough to even provide the cover for my magazine. That was when he was still painting covers for DC Comics (primarily Fables). Was sad to see him leave comics, but I know he preferred single images over sequential storytelling. I'll never be able to afford one of his extraordinary paintings, but I do still have a production sketch he did for Chris Nolan's Batman Begins film. I paid $30 for it.

Such a cool story. Where can we find that cover? I believe James was still in art school around that time. Always a trip to see his younger work/early career as an illustrator!

Your art is amazing. Just love your style. You don´t need all those stains, dots, grunge textures on all those big beautiful paintings. Sometimes less is more:) I am a perfectionist and it hurts when i get stains, spots on my clothing haha.

i think he adds and keeps those marks because they support his theme of miscommunication : the imperfect within what appears to be perfect but is filled with ‘flaws or quirks” ?

I found J Jean works somewhen in 2018, then i became fan of BTS, and in 2021 James Jean did collab with them he made seven huge paintings representing each member of the group. I am amazed with his imagination and color work. Also his layers are so complex and he uses enamel also if i am not mistaken...it is always a treat when he posts speed paint video
